Baseball Edges Rival Point Loma in Close Match-Up

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of California, San Diego baseball team edged out local rival Point Loma 4-3 Monday afternoon at Carroll B. Land. A three-run fourth inning proved to be all the offense the Tritons needed. UC San Diego remains undefeated at 4-0 while the Sea Lions drop to 1-3.

Blake Baumgartner had a multi-hit day for the Tritons and went 2-for-4 with a double. Freshman Izaak Martinez got the start and earned the win.

The Lions got on the board first with a two-run homer from Otto Kemp in center field in the first inning. Point Loma threatened again in the second inning and loaded the bases with two outs. Devon Hawks fielded the ball to Michael Fuhrman at second to end the inning and hold the Sea Lion's lead at 2-0.

Blake Baumgartner hit a double to get the offense started in the fourth. Furhman drilled the ball down the left side to bring Baumgartner in to get the first run of the day. With bases loaded, Jack Tomlinson worked the pitch count and got on base to bring in a runner. Brandon Stewart's single to left brought Jo Bynum home and gave the Tritons their first lead of the day at 3-2.

Jacob Dobmeier came in relief in the bottom of the fourth and was able to work his way out of a pair of situations where the Sea Lions threated. He was able to sniff out the sacrifice bunt from Izayah Alvarez to get the runner out at home. Dobmeier got a strikeout to close out the fourth and halt a runner at third.

Everett Lau added to the Triton's point total with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to increase the lead to 4-2. Point Loma responded with a sacrifice play of their own to cut the Triton's lead at 4-3.

Point Loma looked to keep the game going at the bottom of the ninth, but the Tritons retired the next three batters.

The Tritons continue the series at home with Point Loma on Thursday, February 6 at 5:00 p.m.
