No. T-17 Tritons Fall in Contest to No. 4 Cal at Barbara Kalbus Invite

IRVINE, Calif. — The No. T-17 University of California San Diego women's water polo team came up short in its contest against No. 4-ranked California, 15-7, in the opening round of the UC Irvine Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday.

Sophomore Taylor Onstott scored three goals to lead UC San Diego (4-7), while senior Chanel Schilling, senior Carly Innis, sophomore Sydney Boland and sophomore Grace Pevehouse scored one goal apiece.

In addition, junior goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher tallied eight saves.

The Tritons faced an uphill climb from the start after falling behind 4-0 early and trailing at the end of the first quarter, 7-1. But as usual, UC San Diego rallied, as Pevehouse's goal to end the first half cut Cal's (8-1) deficit to four, 8-4.

A goal by Schilling made the score 9-5 with 7:12 remaining in the third period, and Boland's fourth-quarter score kept the Tritons within striking distance at 11-6 with 5:22 left in the game.

UC San Diego continues this weekend's tournament on Saturday morning against No. 13 San Jose State, beginning at 9:15 a.m.
