SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team closed out its regular season Saturday with its fifth consecutive win, a 3-1 victory at cross county rival Cal State San Marcos. Scores from the Sports Center were 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, and 25-18.
UC San Diego moved to 18-7 overall and concluded its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) slate with a 12-5 mark, the team's most conference wins since the league moved to a 17 match schedule for South Division teams in 2016. The Tritons go into next week's eight team CCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
Jessica Riebleled all players with 16 kills on a .458 (16-5-24) hitting percentage. The senior totaled 21 points by adding three blocks (one solo) and three service aces. Trinity Castanedacontinued her torrid play by putting down 14 kills, while Gina Cortesifinished with 11 kills and three blocks. Setter Isabela Dobrahad 45 assists, nine digs, and three kills while hitting .600 (3-0-5) and libero Alyson Penroseled the Tritons defensively with 14 digs.
UC San Diego, which hit .248 (55-19-145) on the night, held an 8-3 advantage in both blocks and aces.
San Marcos hit .223 (50-21-130), which included a .455 (17-2-33) clip in the second set. Maddy Newcombe had 11 kills and Olive Aguilar had 10. Grecia Cordero-Barr had a match best 16 digs.
The two teams played on Nov. 2 in La Jolla with the Tritons sweeping the Cougars.
UC San Diego is set for the CCAA Tournament, which runs Nov. 21-23 at Cal State San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena. As the third seed, the Tritons will face off against sixth seeded Sonoma State in a quarterfinal on Thursday at noon. The winner of that match will play either No. 2 Cal State LA or No. 7 San Francisco State in a semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m. The championship match is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m. and the victor earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
