UC San Diego Ousted from CCAA Tournament

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team was ousted from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament Thursday as it fell in five sets to Sonoma State in a quarterfinal match-up at Coussoulis Arena on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino.

Scores of the match were 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, and 15-12.

Third-seeded UC San Diego, which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA national poll, fell to 18-8 on the season. The loss brought an end to the Tritons' five match win streak. Sonoma State, the tourney's sixth seed, improved to 18-9. The Seawolves advance to Friday's semifinals and will take on No. 2 Cal State LA, which topped No. 7 San Francisco State in five sets Thursday.

Trinity Castaneda led the Tritons with 16 kills, while Sydney Tekstra had 13 and Emily Hubbard had 10. Hubbard recorded a double-double by adding 10 digs. Setter Isabela Dobra also collected a double-double with 43 assists and 17 digs and libero Alyson Penrose paced the team defensively with 19 digs.

Neither team could get anything going offensively, with UC San Diego hitting .169 (54-25-172) and Sonoma State finishing at .162 (62-34-173). Both teams had eight blocks and the Seawolves held a 78-69 lead in digs. SSU put down 12 service aces in the contest.

Tate Battistini had a match high 22 kills for Sonoma State and Ashleigh Phelps led all players with 24 digs.

UC San Diego now waits to see if it will earn an at-large berth in the NCAA West Regional. The selections will be announced on Monday, Nov. 25, at 4:30 p.m. PT on NCAA.com.
