AZUSA, Calif. - The ninth-ranked University of California San Diego women's tennis team was upset by No. 23 Azusa Pacific by a 6-3 score Thursday afternoon at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
UC San Diego dropped to 0-3, while APU improved to 2-1 following the important, early-season West Region match-up.
The Tritons notched a pair of singles victories in the loss.
At No. 3, junior Alexandra Weil had no trouble with Diana Baumgartnere, who is ranked 32nd nationally in singles play. Weil rolled to a straight-set win, 6-2 and 6-1.
Senior Jasmine Hosseini was also a winner in straight sets, defeating Kara Hinton, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
Hosseini and Weil are both 2-1 in singles action.
Sophomore Becky Chou battled Petra Ivankovic in the third spot and ultimately fell in a tiebreak (6-2, 2-6, 10-8).
Chou and junior Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) stayed unbeaten on the season with an 8-6 win over Baumgartnere and Ivankovic at No. 1 doubles. The Triton duo is now 3-0 when playing together this year.
UC San Diego hosts Idaho State on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.
