BOSTON, Mass. – The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team fell to 14th-ranked Indiana University, 7-6 on the first day of the three-day Harvard Invitational at Blodgett Pool in Boston, Friday evening.
With the loss, UC San Diego falls to 5-9 on the season. IU improves to 8-2.
The Tritons and Hooisers battled back-and-forth throughout four periods, however, IU managed to slip by with the one-goal victory.
UCSD went 1-6 on 6-on-5 situations while the Hoosiers went a perfect 2-2.
In goal, freshman Reilly Gallagher finished the day with five saves. The Triton defense totaled eight steals, with sophomore center Chanel Schilling and senior two-meter defender Lani Tittle grabbing three each.
Schilling also led the way on offense with three goals. Tittle, senior Lauren Boyer and sophomore Krista Schneider also tallied a goal apiece.
Schneider added an assist while Connie Wu finished the day with two assists and senior Alexis Wieseler notched one.
“We knew Indiana would be a very tough opponent,” said head coach Brad Kreutzkmap. “I thought we played very well on defense, however our six-on-five failed us to day and that made the difference. We will pick up the pieces and get ready to play a tough Harvard team tomorrow".
UCSD will return to action Saturday, March 4 for the second day of the Harvard Invitational. The Tritons will face No. 19 Harvard at 8:15 a.m. PT before a game against Iona at 2:30 pm. PT.
