RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The 17th-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team used four goals in the first quarter to defeat No. 25 California Baptist 9-6, Saturday afternoon in Riverside.
With the win, UC San Diego improves to 4-5 overall while the Lancers drop to 5-6 on the season.
Senior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler and sophomore center Chanel Schilling led UCSD with three goals each. Lani Tittle, Lauren Boyer and Krista Schneider each tallied one goal in the win while Kayla Fedler collected a game-high three assists. On defense, Schneider collected four steals while Wieseler added three.
Freshman goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher notched nine saves and played all four quarters in goal for the Tritons.
Schilling put the Tritons on the board first with a goal just two minutes into the game. Less than a minute later, Schneider scored off a power play to make it a 2-0 game. Schilling found the back of the net for her second goal of the game as the Tritons led 3-0 with 3:38 showing in the frame. CBU answered with its first goal of the game from Jessica Castellano however, the Tritons rounded out the scoring in the quarter with a goal from Boyer in the final minute.
Wieseler scored her first goal of the game with 4:53 remaining in the second quarter to give UCSD a four-goal lead. The Lancers fired back with back-to-back goals to round out the half and make it a 5-3 game.
In the third frame, Wieseler scored back-to-back goals before the Lancers' Annie Eubanks found the back of the net to cut the Triton lead to three. Schilling notched her third goal of day off a power play before CBU scored with one second remaining to make it an 8-5 game.
Tittle rounded out the scoring for the Tritons in the final quarter off an assist from Schneider as the Tritons earned their fourth win of the season.
Eubanks and Valerie Spezzaferri led the Lancers in scoring with two goals each while goalkeeper Lina Medeiros notched 11 saves.
UCSD will play in the three-day Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Feb. 24-26. The Tritons will face No. 3 UCLA on Friday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. For the full tournament schedule click here.
