LA JOLLA, Calif. – The ninth-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team took one of two on the first day of the 2017 Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center. UC San Diego slipped passed No. 20 Loyola Marymount, 8-7, before falling to No. 8 UC Irvine, 11-6.
With the split, UCSD moves to 3-2 overall while LMU moves to 3-5 and UCI improves to 6-2 overall after the day.
GAME ONE
The Tritons jumped on the board first when Chanel Schilling found the back of the net off a pass from Krista Schneider. Less than a minute later, the Lions' Hana Vilanova drilled a shot past the UCSD goalkeeper to knot the game, 1-1. Alexis Wieseler scored off a power play with 1:40 showing in the frame to give the Tritons a lead they would not relinquish.
Schneider and Schilling scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter before LMU's Caitlin Schafer found the back of the cage to make it a 4-2 game. Wieseler scored unassisted with five minutes remaining to give UCSD its largest lead of the game, 5-2. The Lions answered with two more goals to cut the Triton lead to one. Junior Kayla Fedler scored the Tritons fourth goal of the quarter with under two minutes remaining in the half. Sophomore Shelby Stender was credited with the assist. However, LMU rounded out frame with a goal from Vilanova to make it a 6-5 game at the half.
LMU scored off a power play to open the second half and knot the game 6-6. Wieseler connected with senior Lauren Boyer who found the back of the net to take back the lead, 7-6, with 3:30 showing.
Senior Lani Tittle opened up the fourth frame with a goal that gave UCSD a two-point lead. Schneider earned the assist. LMU capped the scoring with a goal late in the fourth.
Schilling and Wieseler each tallied two goals.
Freshman Reilly Gallagher collected one save in the win. The Lions' Claire Wright notched nine saves.
GAME TWO
Boyer scored the first for UCSD with an assist from Schilling with 4:28 left in the first quarter, however the Anteaters' Kelsey Thorton and Cara Borkovec notched two and one goal, respectively, to give UCI a 3-1 lead in the first frame.
Wieseler scored within the first minute of the second frame to narrow the gap, 3-2, but UCI answered with two goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
A power play goal from Wieseler followed by a score from Boyer brought the game with in one, 5-4, early in the third quarter. UCI scored back-to-back goals to extend its lead before Wieseler scored unassisted. The Anteaters found the back of the cage with :26 showing on the clock to lead 8-5 after the third.
UCI opened up its lead in the fourth frame, scoring three goals to ultimately seal the victory. Wieseler tallied her fourth goal of the day with 6:57 left in the game.
Gallagher tallied nine saves in the win while the Anteaters' Annika Nelson collected three.
Wieseler led the Tritons with four goals followed by Boyer with two.
UCSD will continue to play in the two-day Triton Invitational Sunday at 9:50 a.m. against No. 18 UC Davis.
