LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team won its opening league match Friday night, downing Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the contest went 25-14, 25-18, 23-25 and 27-25. With the victory, UC San Diego improved to 4-5 overall. CSUDH, also playing in its first CCAA match of the season, fell to 3-6.
Middle blocker Rebecca Seaberry led the Tritons offensively, producing 17 points on 12 kills and eight blocks (two solos), with all of those totals career-highs for the junior. She hit .476 with just two errors in 21 attack attempts, her best percentage since October of 2015.
Junior outside Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) put down a team-best 13 kills and completed a double-double by adding 11 digs. Freshman middle Jessica Rieble hit .533 (9-1-15) and racked up nine blocks (one solo), while senior outside Meagan Wright (Bonita/Bonita Vista HS) led UCSD defensively with 19 digs.
The Tritons stonewalled the Toros at the net, holding a 19-11 advantage in blocks. It matched the team's highest stuff total during its NCAA Division II era (since 2000), last occurring in September of 2010.
UC San Diego hit .223 (50-17-148), it's best performance of the season, while holding Dominguez Hills to a paltry .082 (48-34-171).
For the Toros, Claire Autry had a match-high 16 kills and Kylie Osgood led all players with 21 digs.
The match saw the score tied 34 times, 23 of those coming over the final two sets. In the fourth frame, the Toros saved three match points and evened it up at 25-25. However, the Tritons closed it out with a Rieble block and a Seaberry kill off a set from junior Rachel Linden.
UCSD is now 50-3 all-time against CSUDH and 13-4 in CCAA openers since joining the league in 2000.
UC San Diego plays its sixth-consecutive home match on Saturday, Sept. 17 as it hosts league rival Cal State LA (5-4, 1-0) at 7:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles won on the road Friday, taking down Cal State San Marcos in four sets.
