UCSD Loses Twice On Final Day of D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team went 0-2 on the final day of play of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase, dropping four-set matches against Central Washington and Point Loma at RIMAC Arena.

UC San Diego, now 3-5 on the season, finished the three-day tournament with a 1-3 record.

Scores against Central Washington were 17-25, 26-24, 27-25 and 25-21.

Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) had a match-high 21 kills and added 17 digs. Morgan Kissick set a new career-high with 13 kills, while Jessyca Beksa had 11. Jessica Rieble turned in a solid match, hitting .529 with nine kills and no errors while adding five blocks. Lindsey Chun paced the Tritons defensively with 24 digs.

Shelby Mauritson and Madison Weg each had 12 kills for the Wildcats. Kiah Jones posted a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Kyla Morgan bested all with 25 digs. 

CWU owned a 13-10 lead in blocks, seven of those coming from Sabrina Wheelhouse with six apiece for Erin Little and Weg.

Overall, UC San Diego hit .198 (61-24-187) and Central Washington ended up at .192 (58-25-172). The Tritons had seven service errors.

Scores in the final contest of the tournament were 25-18, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-23 in favor of crosstown foe Point Loma (2-6).

Wright tallied a team-best 12 kills and tacked on 17 digs, upping her string of double-doubles to 12 matches dating back to last season. Rieble was just behind with 11 kills and Chun was the team leader in digs with 21. Marie Paris notched a double-double with 31 assists and 15 digs.

Samantha Krakower had 14 kills and Christin Fisher amassed 37 digs.

The Sea Lions owned a 105-90 lead in digs and made 11 errors from the service line.

Wright averaged 4.2 kills/set over four matches, the most of any player in the tourney. Paris was third with her 9.73 assists/set average and Chun ranked fourth with 6.2 digs/set.

As a team, UC San Diego was second in digs (22.07/set) and aces (1.2/set) and third in blocks (2.4/set).

In other matches at RIMAC Arena Saturday, Cal Poly Pomona blanked BYU-Hawaii and Northwest Nazarene edged Point Loma in five sets. 

UCSD was one of six schools hosting a portion of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase this week. The three-day tourney features a total of 38 teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) and PacWest.

UC San Diego heads into CCAA play this coming week, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 16 and Cal State LA on Saturday, Sept. 17. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m.
