SAN DIEGO - For the second time this season, the 17th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team won a crosstown meeting with No. 29 Point Loma as the Tritons edged the Sea Lions, 5-4, Saturday at PLNU Tennis Courts.
UCSD came from behind twice as it was down 2-1 following the doubles portion of the match and 4-3 late in singles play.
The Tritons were victorious in four of six singles matches with Alexandre Miaule (No. 3), Rodrigo Amaral (No. 4), Horea Porutiu (No. 5) and Riku Hashiyada (No. 6) all posting wins. Miaule and Amaral won in straight sets, while Porutiu and Hashiyada went to three sets.
Porutiu's topping of CJ Erion at No. 5 gave UC San Diego it's fifth and deciding point. The senior took it by scores of 7-6, 4-6 and 6-3.
The No. 1 singles match between Triton Eric Tseng and Sea Lion Andre Staab, ranked 21st nationally, went to Point Loma in three sets. The first two sets were split by 6-2 scores before Staab won the third, 6-3.
UCSD's doubles victory came at No. 3 as Tseng and Richard Han defeated Martin Blaho and James Tenbroeck, 9-7.
The Sea Lions won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In the top spot, the 15th-ranked duo of Staab and Daniel Milliken dispatched Miaule and Porutiu, 8-3.
UCSD improved to 13-7 overall while PLNU dropped to 10-12. The Tritons dominated the Sea Lions, 8-1, on Feb. 3 in La Jolla.
UC San Diego plays at UCLA, ranked fourth in the nation among Division I teams, on April 14 at 2 p.m.
