ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team grabbed wins in two Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) matchups, Saturday at Dr. G. Edward Rudolf Pool on the campus of Sonoma State. The Tritons defeated Sonoma State 10-4 in their first game and trounced Cal State Monterey Bay 21-6 in game two.
With the two wins, UCSD improves to 21-9 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Seawolves drop to a 10-12 overall record and 1-1 in the WWPA. The Otters are now 4-20 overall and 0-2 against the conference.
GAME ONE - UC San Diego 10, Sonoma State 4
UCSD held SSU to just one goal in the second half to prevail, 10-4.
The Tritons got three goals from redshirt junior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler, junior center Lauren Boyer and senior attacker Emma Sasson to go up 3-1. With one second remaining in the first quarter, Nicole Groat was able to put one away for the Seawolves to cut the margin to one.
UCSD started to pull away in the second quarter with three more scores, two of them being five-meter penalty shots from Wiesler. The Tritons led 6-3 at halftime.
UCSD shut out SSU in the third quarter and put away three for a 9-3 advantage going into the final period. The Tritons scored one in the fourth period from freshman attacker Shelby Stender. With 57 seconds left Carleigh Robinson fired one home for the Seawolves' fourth goal.
Wiesler led the way for the Tritons with four goals. Senior goalie Courtney Miller played three quarters and had one save. Sophomore goalie Emma Scholz came in for the final period and amassed two saves. SSU goalie Taylor Plorin stopped nine shots.
GAME TWO - UC San Diego 21, Cal State Monterey Bay 6
UCSD's offense could not be stopped as the Tritons won by 15 scores, 21-6.
UCSD scored a season-high 21 goals, 11 coming in the first half and 10 in the second half. The Tritons put away seven in the first quarter and allowed three Otter scores.
UCSD shut out CSUMB in the second period, 4-0, to take an 11-3 lead at halftime. The Tritons cruised the rest of the way, scoring six in the third quarter and four in the final frame for the win. UCSD allowed three Otter goals in the second half.
Scholz played goalie for the whole game and had 15 saves. The Tritons were led by freshman center Chanel Schilling's five goals. CSUMB got its six goals from six different players. Otter goalie Morgen Fain had three saves.
UCSD will play Cal State East Bay in a “non-conference game against a conference opponent” matchup on Sunday, April 3 at 11 a.m.
