LA JOLLA, Calif. - The ninth-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team survived a late rally from No. 22 California Baptist to win by a final score of 7-6 in a non-conference matchup, Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With a four-goal lead, UCSD gave up three consecutive CBU scores late in the game as the Lancers cut the margin to one. The Tritons got a powerplay goal from redshirt junior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler with 1:10 remaining in the game to take a 7-5 advantage. CBU's Lizette Perez scored with 36 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game, but the Lancers could not get the equalizer.
UCSD is now on a four-game win streak and improves to 23-9. CBU drops to 20-10.
The Tritons were led by junior center Lauren Boyer and Wieseler who scored two each. The Lancers got two scores apiece from Hannah Evans, Laura Kocsis and Lizette Perez. Senior goalie Courtney Miller amassed 12 saves in the cage. CBU goalie Meghan Rowland had 13 stops.
The UCSD defense did not allow a Lancer goal in the opening quarter. The Tritons grabbed a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period as senior attackers Laurel Kistler and Julia Kirkland put away one each.
CBU answered with two scores from Evans and Perez to even the score, 2-2, in the second frame. UCSD pulled away, getting two consecutive goals. Wieseler buried a five-meter penalty shot and Boyer was able to find the back of the cage on the next offensive possession 18 seconds later. The Tritons went into halftime with a 4-2 lead.
UCSD scored two more in the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the game, 6-2.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season with a crosstown showdown against San Diego State on Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. in the 15th annual Harper Cup game. It is also Senior Night for UCSD as the Tritons will honor their seniors before the contest.
