NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team won its sixth straight game, fifth in the last three days, 13-6 at No. 25 CSUN Sunday at Matador Pool .
The Tritons improve their overall record to 13-6. The Matadors drop to 6-12.
CSUN quickly grabbed a 2-1 lead to start. UCSD answered back with three goals, two from senior attacker Julia Kirkland and one from redshirt junior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler, to end the first quarter on top, 4-2.
The Tritons put away four more in the second period, getting two scores from senior attacker Laurel Kistler and one each from sophomore utility Kayla Fedler and Kirkland. The Matadors scored twice in the quarter as UCSD went into halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
The Tritons opened the second half with three consecutive goals, coming from Kirkland, Fedler and junior center Lauren Boyer, to take an 11-4 lead. CSUN ended the third frame with two scores to cut the margin to five.
UCSD held the Matadors scoreless in the final period and fired away two goals to win by seven.
“This team continues to play really well,” said head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. “A lot of the things we've been working on are really starting to click. CSUN is a much better team than their record indicates and we really matched up well with them.”
Senior goalie Courtney Miller had six saves in the cage. Kirkland led the Tritons with four goals. Kistler and Fedler pitched in three and two, respectively. Emily Fuller was the Matadors' leading scorer with two.
UCSD will host Iona for its next contest on Thursday, March 10 at 6 p.m. The Tritons will then play four games at the two-day Aztec Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13. UCSD will face Bucknell, Indiana, Princeton and Harvard.
