CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team closed out the Claremont Convergence, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, with two wins Saturday. The Tritons dominated the Athenas, 15-1, at Axelrood Pool, on the campus of CMS, and the Sagehens, 12-4, at Haldeman Pool, on the campus of PP.
"We had a great team effort in both games," said head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. "We had a great day. Every player on the team contributed to the wins."
GAME ONE - UC San Diego 15, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1
UCSD's defense was stellar and held the Athenas scoreless until 5:15 left in the fourth quarter, as the Tritons won by a score of 15-1.
The Tritons put away five scores in the first two quarters to take a 5-0 lead at halftime. UCSD got two goals from redshirt junior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler and one each from junior two-meter defender Lani Tittle, senior center Lauren Finwall and sophomore utility Kayla Fedler.
The Tritons scored five more times in the third to go into the final frame with a 10-0 advantage. CMS got its first and only goal from Roxy Kiessling in the fourth quarter. UCSD rifled home five more in the period, including two from freshman attacker Riley Heiduk, to prevail by 14.
Fedler led the Tritons with a career-high four goals. Heiduk had three and freshman attacker Shelby Stender and Tittle pitched in two. Goalie Emma Scholz compiled seven saves.
GAME TWO - UC San Diego 12, Pomona-Pitzer 4
The Tritons outscored the Sagehens 9-2 in the final three periods after leading by one at the end of the first.
The two teams traded two goals each to start. UCSD took the lead as senior attacker Laurel Kistler found the back of the cage as the Tritons ended the first quarter up 3-2.
UCSD shut out PP in the second frame and found the back of the cage three times to go into halftime up, 6-2, getting two scores from Fedler and one from Alexis Wieseler.
Kistler fired home two more in the third to complete her hat trick. The Tritons took a 9-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
UCSD scored three times in the final period, getting goals from junior center Lauren Boyer, freshman attacker Krista Schneider and freshman center Chanel Schilling, to cruise to an eight-goal victory.
Courtney Miller amassed six saves inside the cage. Kistler and Fedler both completed hat tricks with three goals. Wieseler and Boyer had two scores each.
The Tritons will complete their five games in three days on Sunday, March 6 in a road contest against No. 25 CSUN at 12 p.m.
