No. 10 Tritons Suffer Heartbreaking Overtime Loss at No. 4 Hawai?i, 11-10

HONOLULU - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team was outscored 2-1 in overtime as No. 4 Hawai'i defeated the Tritons 11-10, Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

With one second remaining in regulation, the Rainbow Wahine's Irene Gonzalez was able to put one away on a six-on-five to force to tie the game, 9-9, and force overtime. UCSD got the first score of overtime in the first extra period from sophomore utility Kayla Fedler on a powerplay. Hawai'i evened the score in the second period of extras and got the go-ahead goal from Femke Aan with 56 seconds remaining.

"It was a heartbreaking loss for sure," said head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. "Give all the credit to Hawai'i for not giving up. We really thought we had that one, but we will just have to wait another day."

With the loss, The Tritons drop to 19-9 on the season. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 15-5 in 2016.

Senior attacker Julia Kirkland, junior center Lauren Boyer, freshman center Chanel Schilling and redshirt junior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler scored two goals each for UCSD. Senior goalie Courtney Miller amassed 11 saves. Hawai'i was led by Gonzalez and Julia Barton's three scores. Hawai'i goalie Ymane Hage compiled nine saves.

Both squads traded two goals in the first quarter. The Triton scores came from Kirkland and Boyer. Schilling and Kirkland were able to find the back of the cage in the second period as UCSD opened up to a 4-2 lead. Hawai'i was able to get one in before halftime as the Tritons took a 4-3 advantage into halftime.

UCSD was outscored 3-2 in the third quarter as both teams deadlocked 6-6, going into the final period of regulation.

The Tritons grabbed a 9-7 advantage in the fourth frame, with goals coming from Schilling, Boyer and Wieseler. The Rainbow Wahine were able to put away two in the last 55 seconds, including the equalizer with one second remaining.

UCSD will play a pair of WWPA games for its next contests on Saturday, April 2 in Rohnert Park. The Tritons will take on Sonoma State at 10 a.m., followed by Cal State Monterey Bay at 1 p.m.
