AZUSA, Calif. - The 21st-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team staged an upset victory on the road at No. 11 Azusa Pacific Saturday, winning by a score of 5-4.
UCSD (3-2) won two of the three doubles matches and three of six singles tilts.
In singles action, Eric Tseng (No. 2), Justin Zhang (No. 3) and Alexandre Miaule (No. 5) were victorious. Zhang and Miaule won in straight sets, while Tseng's win clinched the team victory for the Tritons.
In the No. 1 singles spot, APU's Jan Meyer, the top-ranked singles player in the country, downed No. 15 Axel Bouillin by scores of 6-2 and 7-5.
Miaule and Horea Porutiu teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Pascal Engel and Marnix Pluim, 9-8. At No. 3, Zhang and Rodrigo Amaral topped Olger Van Gent and Shepherd Newcomb, 9-8.
Azusa Pacific's Meyer and Christian Schmid defeated Bouillin and Tseng, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
The Tritons entered the match as the fourth-ranked team in the West, while the Cougars were second.
