LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 21st-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team defeated No. 26 Point Loma, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon in a crosstown meeting at Northview Courts.
UCSD swept all six singles matches and won two of three doubles contests.
The No. 1 singles tilt featured a battle between Triton Axel Bouillin, ranked 15th nationally, against Sea Lion Andre Staab, the 16th-ranked singles player in the country. Bouillin took the first set by a score of 6-1, but Staab evened it up with a 6-3 win in the second. The tiebreaker went to Bouillin, 10-6.
Eric Tseng, Justin Zhang, Horea Porutiu and Alexandre Miaule all won their matches in straight sets. Richard Han won in a tiebreaker. Miaule's 6-4, 7-6 win against CJ Erion at No. 5 clinched the victory for UC San Diego.
In doubles action, Point Loma earned its lone victory at No. 1 as the 25th-ranked duo of Staab and Daniel Milliken topped Bouillin and Rodrigo Amaral, 8-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Miaule and Porutiu defeated Martin Blaho and Adrian von Braun, 8-6. Tseng and Zhang shutout Grant Alston and James Tenbroeck, 8-0, in the third spot.
UCSD improved to 2-1 overall while PLNU fell to 0-2. The Tritons are ranked fourth in the West Region while the Sea Lions are just behind in fifth.
UC San Diego plays at No. 11 Azusa Pacific on Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
