CARSON, Calif. - Amanda Colla and Meagan Wright each put away 19 kills to lead the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory on the road Tuesday at league opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills.
UC San Diego won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25 and 15-12, improving to 11-8 on the year and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Dominguez Hills is now 7-12 overall and 4-7 in league play.
"I'm really happy with the way we played tonight," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We've had a few five-set losses and its nice to finish one with a win."
The San Diego duo of Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) and Wright (Bonita/Bonita Vista HS) were fire, each finishing with a double-double. Wright hit .364 (19-3-44) with 15 digs, five block assists and two aces, while Colla swung at a .341 (19-5-41) clip and added a team-high 21 digs and a pair of block assists. The junior's 19 kills were a career-best.
Kayla Evans (San Diego/Del Norte HS) notched a double-double with a career-high 55 assists and 14 digs, while Morgan Kissick had 10 kills and six block assists.
Morelia Castro led CSUDH with 14 kills and Cathryn Lopez amassed a career-high 31 digs to top all players in that category.
The Tritons hit .243 (67-22-185) while holding the Toros to .182 (59-24-192). Both teams were effective at the net as Dominguez Hills had 12 blocks and UC San Diego had 11.
With Cal State Dominguez Hills leading 8-5 in the fifth set, UC San Diego exploded for eight unanswered points to put the Tritons up 13-8, essentially sealing the victory. Colla accounted for five of the points with kills. The Toros won four of the next five points, but Kissick put down a kill to end it.
"Dominguez Hills always plays well against us and once again, they showed no quit," said Luyties. "However, we proved again that we can come back when things aren't going our way."
It was the first five-set win for UCSD in four attempts this season.
UC San Diego returns to RIMAC Arena to host Humboldt State for the first and only time this season on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. UCSD students are admitted free.
