CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 20 UC San Diego women's water polo team won both games in Claremont on Saturday, to improve to 3-1 at this weekend's tournament. The Tritons opened up the day with a 13-3 win over Cal Lutheran, then concluded the weekend with a 17-4 victory against La Verne.
With Saturday's sweep, UCSD improves to 11-13 on the season.
Game One
The Tritons came out firing in the opening game scoring five goals on top of shutting out Cal Lutheran in the first quarter.
Laurel Kistler started off the second period with a goal to not only extend UCSD's lead to 6-0, but complete the hat trick. With 6:18 left in the half, Cal Lutheran scored its first goal of the match. Still, the Tritons entered the half with a 9-1 lead as Lauren Boyer, Rachel Emami and Julia Kirkland closed out the period with goals.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Miller held Cal Lutheran scoreless for the second period of the game in the third. Miller finished the day with six saves.
With a goal from Hannah Caskey and Connie Wu in the final quarter, the Tritons secured the 13-3 win.
Game Two
In the final match, UCSD scored a season-high 17 goals to defeat La Verne. The Tritons once again scored five goals in the opening quarter thanks to Lani Tittle, Kirkland and Boyer to take a 5-2 lead.
Boyer completed the hat trick on the Tritons first possesion in the second period. With two scores from Kistler and one from Kayla Fedler, UCSD went into the half with a 9-3 advantage.
Miller once again held an opponent scoreless for a quarter in the third frame. Kistler completed her second hat trick of the day after Tittle and Wu opened up the second half with a goal of their own. Hannah Caskey closed out the period scoring her first goal of the season on a 5-meter penalty shot.
In the final frame, Tittle became the third Triton to complete the hat trick against La Verne. Including Tittle's goal, UCSD scored four times in the fourth quarter to take a 17-4 win.
