KONA, Hawaii - UC San Diego's Kyra Scott defeated the No. 2-ranked player in the nation, but the Tritons were downed, 8-1, by BYU-Hawaii Friday in NCAA West Region women's tennis action.

Scott, ranked 22nd nationally in singles play, took down Dallas Zhang in a grueling, four-hour battle at the No. 1 position. Scores went 7-6, 6-7 and 10-5 in favor of the junior from Irvine, Calif. Scott is now 4-1 on the season.

The Seasiders won the remaining five singles matches. In the second spot, Karen Liu, ranked sixth in the country, defeated Jasmine Hosseini in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. Marietta Tuionetoa, the 10th-ranked player, dispatched Britta Mosser, 6-3 and 6-2, at No. 3.

BYUH swept all three doubles contests. It was a tight match-up between two ranked duos at No. 1. Liu and Zhang, ranked third in the nation, edged out No. 14 Mosser and Scott, 9-7.

In the national team rankings, BYU-Hawaii is fourth while UCSD is 19th.

The Tritons take on Hawaii Hilo Saturday at 6 p.m.
