UC San Diego Athletics, ViaSat Launch Online Streaming Partnership

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics Department will officially kick off a unique partnership with local broadband services and technology company ViaSat when the Triton men's and women's basketball teams face Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night at RIMAC Arena, with the women's contest starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30. The two major San Diego entities have combined to create UCSDtritons.TV, an online streaming platform that will broadcast UC San Diego athletic events.

Initially, the channel will carry all Triton home basketball, volleyball and water polo games, a majority of baseball and softball contests, and at least a selection of home events featuring virtually all of UCSD's 23 intercollegiate sports.

"This is a major step for UC San Diego Athletics in terms of being able to consistently present a high-quality, readily-accessible viewing option for supporters of our various programs," said UCSD Senior Associate Athletics Director Ken Grosse. "Being able to collaborate with a local partner of the stature and reputation for innovation that ViaSat possesses, makes it a value-added proposition for us."

All broadcasts will be live, in high definition, and most will include audio talent. They will be streamed using ViaSat's powerful ViaSat Exede™ satellite network. The live-streaming of events can be watched in real time over the Internet from any connected device at UCSDtritons.tv.

Broadcasts will be utilizing ViaSat's high-speed live streaming technology - which leverages the power of ViaSat's high-capacity satellite, ViaSat-1, offering 140Gbps, to enable viewers the ability to access key sporting events in unparalleled broadcast quality from any connected location.

"UCSD and ViaSat have a long-standing partnership in creating a path for students to engage with new technologies and broadcast standards," said Grant Markhart, director, Live Events division, ViaSat. "Through our partnership with UCSD, we are showing that our technology is changing the standard for how content is created, delivered and viewed. This is an exciting time in sports broadcasting and we're proud to partner with UCSD on this venture."

Friday night's basketball games will be free to all viewers, as will two additional home games this month-Dec. 14 vs. Western Oregon and Dec. 20 vs. Cal State San Marcos. Starting Jan. 1, viewing will be subscription-based. During year one, two packages will be available. A comprehensive package that gives viewers access to all streamed events from Jan. 1 through the end of the academic year will be available for $29.99. It is estimated that this will include between 50 and 75 games. A single game option can be purchased for $5.99.

Fans will be able to purchase packages starting Monday, Dec. 21, and between that date and Jan. 1, buyers will receive a discounted price of $25.99.
