LA JOLLA, Calif. - Freshman center Chris Hansen dropped 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the UC San Diego men's basketball team scored a 76-67 upset win over nationally fourth-ranked California Baptist Tuesday evening at RIMAC Arena.
UCSD moved to 3-0 with the non-conference victory. Suffering its first loss of the young season, CBU dropped to 6-1.
The Tritons shot 50 percent (29-58) for the game and made 13 of 15 free throws. The Lancers made 38.3 percent (23-60) of their shots and held a 39-32 advantage in rebounds, which included a 19-11 edge on the offensive glass. UCSD scored 24 points off of 14 CBU turnovers and the Lancers made just four of 21 three-point attempts.
Hansen was 7-for-11 from the field with four offensive boards and two steals in 25 minutes of floor time. Adam Klie had a team-best 18 points, while Drew Dyer totaled 12 and Grant Jackson netted 10. Klie and McMillan each had a pair of blocks.
California Baptist got a game-high 20 points from Michael Smith, who completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Seven of his boards were of the offensive kind. Taj Spencer finished with 16 points and Trevone Williams had 10.
The Tritons led by 10 points, 39-29, at the half. Their largest lead of the game was 12 when a Zach McMillan layup gave them a 54-42 advantage with 10:54 remaining in the game. The Lancers climbed back in to it and cut the deficit to a single point as a Spencer layup at 3:22 made it 60-59. However, UC San Diego closed out the evening on a 16-8 run.
The last time UCSD defeated a higher nationally-ranked team was back in 2006 when the Tritons downed No. 2 Montevallo, 61-60, in Las Vegas.
UC San Diego travels to Belmont, Calif., to take part in Notre Dame de Namur's Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 27-28. The Tritons play Holy Names Friday at 5 p.m. and take on NDNU Saturday at 7 p.m.
