ARCATA, Calif. - UC San Diego had its perfect record against Humboldt State blemished Thursday as the Tritons were edged in five sets in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's volleyball match at Lumberjack Arena.
Scores of the match were 19-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-13 in favor of Humboldt State. UCSD fell to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. HSU improved to 6-5, 4-3 in the conference.
It was the first victory for the Lumberjacks in 19 meetings against the Tritons.
"We had trouble giving up leads, there were too many runs of points by Humboldt that we didn't stop," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We need to figure out how to get out of those situations and stay poised when teams are making good plays against us."
HSU mounted comebacks in the fourth and fifth sets. The deciding set was tied at 13-13 before back-to-back Lumberjack kills put an end to the match.
Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led the Tritons with 19 kills, 19 digs and 20.5 points, all team-highs. Heidi Sierks (50 assists, 11 digs) and Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) (15 kills, 18 digs) also recorded double-doubles. Alyssa McNeely had 10 kills and Rebecca Seaberry finished with five block assists.
For the Jacks, Symone Hayden had a match-high 23 kills and Kaitlyn Dunaway led all players with 24 digs.
Neither team hit particularly well with HSU at .157 (62-31-197) and UCSD at .155 (63-33-193).
It was just the second five-set outing for UC San Diego this season. The Tritons lost at Point Loma in early September.
UCSD plays at Sonoma State (8-3, 4-1) Saturday at 7 p.m. SSU, which has won four straight, hosts No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino Friday. The Seawolves and Coyotes are tied for first place in the CCAA.
