LA JOLLA, Calif. - Drew Dyer netted a game-high 29 points to lead the UC San Diego men's basketball team to a 69-53 win against league rival Chico State Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
The victory moved UCSD to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Chico State, which entered the night tied for first place in the conference, fell to 7-4 and 4-2.
Dyer was 11-for-17 from the field, which included four three-pointers. The junior forward also added a team co-high seven rebounds. His point total was a season best and one short of his career high of 30, recorded at Cal State East Bay in January of 2013.
Hunter Walker finished with 14 points and four assists for the Tritons, while Aleks Lipovic had eight points and Adam Klie grabbed seven boards.
Overall, UCSD made 46 percent of its shots (25-56) and hit 11 of its 13 free throws.
The Wildcats got 16 points from Tanner Giddings and 10 rebounds out of Jordan Semple.
Chico also shot 46 percent (21-46), but turned the ball over 19 times, leading to 19 UC San Diego points.
UCSD closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 31-24 at the break. The Tritons steadily increased their advantage in the second frame. With 22 seconds remaining, Dyer hit a pair of free throws to put UCSD up by 19 (69-50), its largest lead of the game.
To wrap up a five-game home stand, the Tritons host Sonoma State on Jan. 9 and San Francisco State on Jan. 10. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m.
