BUSY WEEK FOR MEN'S SOCCER FOLLOWING HOME SPLIT
Sitting 1-1 following the opening weekend of the season, Coach Jon Pascale's Men's Soccer team faces a busy, three-game week that begins with a crosstown road contest at Point Loma Tuesday…Then it's back home for the first two of four consecutive home games with Dixie State in town Thursday and Cal State San Marcos visiting Sunday.
After surrendering a fluky early goal, Pascale's side rebounded for a 2-1 verdict in last Thursday's 2014 debut at home against St. Martin's…Senior Brandon Bauman, superb all night, struck a game-tying volley in the final minute of the first half and sophomore Sam Palano's first career goal proved to be the game-winner at 79:08...Saturday night, the Tritons were victimized by a goal at 5:50 of the first half but this time couldn't bounce back, suffering a 1-0 loss to physical, well-organized Western Washington…UCSD held its own in the run of play but was unable to capitalize in the key moments of a fairly chippy affair.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYS HOME OPENER THURSDAY VS. AZUSA PACIFIC
Coach Brian McManus' Women's Soccer team makes its 2014 home debut this week, testing Azusa Pacific Thursday and Cal Baptist Saturday at Triton Soccer Stadium…UCSD comes in 1-1 after splitting a pair of games in the Northwest last week.
The Tritons started the '14 campaign with a 2-1 loss to No. 25 Seattle Pacific…On the Falcons new artificial surface, UCSD fell behind early, surrendering goals in the second and 22nd minutes…After some encouraging second half play, UCSD finally broke through at 81:25 as freshman Jordyn McNutt flicked in her first collegiate goal…The offense came alive for McManus two days later as McNutt sandwiched a second score between goals by seniors Cassie Callahan and Izzy Pozurama in a 3-0 Triton romp at St. Martin's…UCSD had a 23-6 edge in the shots column and earned 11 corners while giving up just two.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL OPENS CCAA PLAY AT HOME FRIDAY VS. CSU STANISLAUS
The No. 11 Women's Volleyball team got off to a rocky start in the Great Northwest, splitting four matches at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Central Washington in Ellensburg…Senior Caitlin Brenton (14 kills) and junior Danielle Dahle (12) helped lift the Tritons to a 3-2 game one decision Thursday over Hawaii Pacific that was decided by a 17-15 final set…Later that day, UCSD was rolled over by host Central Washington, 3-1, in a contest that featured 14 aces, all but one by the Wildcats...Coach Ricci Luyties' squad rebounded for a 3-0 triumph over St. Martin's in an early match Friday that featured freshman Amanda Colla's double double (13 kills, 11 digs)…Junior middle blocker Kameron Cooper ripped 15 kills while hitting .462 but it wasn't enough to stop No. 12 Western Washington from topping the Tritons, 3-1, in the tournament finale…All-American Dahle missed the last two matches after a collision with Brenton resulted in a swollen, black eye.
UCSD now jumps into CCAA action, hosting Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State at home this week…In the conference pre-season coaches' poll, the Tritons were tabbed for second place with Chico State slotted fifth and Stanislaus pegged for the cellar.
UCSB NEXT AS MEN'S WATER POLO GOES 2-2 IN OPENING TOURNEY
After splitting its four games in last weekend's season-opening Triton Invitational, the No. 10 Men's Water Polo team gets its first taste of road action this week, hooking up with No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon.
In a triumphant return from the redshirt ranks, seniors Josh Stiling (4) and Luke Syka (3) accounted for seven goals in UCSD's, 16-6, season-opening victory over Cal Lutheran Saturday morning…Saturday afternoon was another story as the Tritons trailed No. 4 Cal by a single goal at halftime only to be done in by six unanswered third period goals as the Bears pulled away, 16-8…Stiling racked up three more tallies vs. the Bears.
On Sunday's final day, the Tritons stopped a feisty Redlands team, 12-8, before succumbing to No. 3 UCLA, 13-5...Senior goalie Cameron Ravanbach stopped 15 Bulldog shots and four players scored two goals each in game one and in the closer, UCSD held the powerful Bruins to their lowest goal total of the tournament (they had averaged 23 in the first three).

X-COUNTRY MEN, WOMEN 1-2 IN OPENER; RIVERSIDE INVITATIONAL LOOMS
On heels of a successful 2014 premier in last weekend's Lancer Invitational, Coach Nate Garcia's Cross Country team returns to the Inland Empire for Saturday's UC Riverside Invitational…The men will run 8K and the women 6K over the UCR Ag Ops course…Both will compete in the Invitational Division where between 12 and 15 teams are expected.
Last Saturday, the Triton men were first and the women second at the Cal Baptist-hosted event…UCSD's men outscored runner-up Cal Baptist, 21-41, while the women were 19 points behind the first place Lancers… Junior Daniel Hauptman toured the 6K layout in 18:13.17, snagging second place as UCSD recorded five of the top seven men's finishes courtesy of Tanner Collins, Tareq Alwafai, Scott Acton and Brendan Gee…Junior Corinne Hinkle beat the pack home in the 4K women's race, posting a mark of 14:13.05…Senior Paige Hughes, Michele LeRoux and Madison Tanner were 10th, 11th and 13th respectively with junior Chandler Colquitt rounding out the scorers in 14th.
