SAN FRANCISCO - A strong offensive output led the 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at San Francisco State Saturday night.
Scores from The Swamp went 25-19, 21-25, 29-27 and 25-18. UCSD improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). SFSU, which was coming off a five-set win against Cal Poly Pomona Friday, fell to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in league matches.
The Tritons posted a season-high .297 attack percentage with 65 kills and just 13 errors in 175 attempts. They also had 11 team blocks, tying their second-highest total of the year.
"It's amazing what good passing can do for the offense," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties.
On the individual front, Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) had a match co-high 18 kills.
Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) had another double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 18 digs. The freshman now has five doubles, including three straight.
Caitlin Brenton totaled 14 kills and Kameron Cooper had six blocks. Setter Heidi Sierks amassed 52 assists and also completed a double-double by adding 13 digs. Makensie Bates established a new career-high with 29 digs.
The Gators were also fairly strong on the attack with a .249 (67-21-185) hitting percentage.
Jaclyn Clark led her team with 18 kills, while Bria Morgan had 16, Kaileen Mejia totaled 14 and Jazmine Williams finished with 11. Setter Jacquie Brice registered 55 assists and 21 digs. Jessica Nicerio also had 21 scoops on the night.
The win was a solid rebound for the Tritons, who lost in four sets at Sonoma State Friday.
"Tonight was a great test for our character," said Luyties. "We played a good team in a difficult atmosphere after a tough loss last night. Our players showed that they are mentally tough."
UCSD remains on the road for another week, playing at Humboldt State on Oct. 2 and at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 4. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
