ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Four players recorded double-doubles but the 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss at California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Sonoma State Friday night.
Scores from the Wolves' Den were 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-23 as the Seawolves improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA. UCSD fell to 6-4 on the season and 4-2 in league play.
"We competed hard but didn't pass well, so it made it difficult for us to have any offensive flow all night," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties.
UCSD posted a .920 reception percentage to SSU's .988. The Tritons were aced seven times while they had just one themselves. They hit .189 (55-24-164) to the Seawolves' .236 (62-21-174). UCSD held an 8-5 edge in blocks.
Caitlin Brenton (16 kills, 16 digs), Amanda Colla (13 kills, 12 digs), Danielle Dahle (11 kills, 15 digs) and Heidi Sierks (41 assists, 12 digs) all registered double-doubles. It was the seventh of the season for Sierks, a team-high. Dahle and Alyssa McNeely each had three blocks.
For Sonoma State, Caylie Seitz led all players with 21 kills and 22.5 points. Kelsey Hull had a double-double with 13 kills a match-high 20 digs. Regan Richert also had 13 kills.
The match was tied 37 times total, 17 of those coming in the opening set.
UCSD almost forced a fifth set. The Tritons staved off two straight match points with a kill by Kameron Cooper and an attack error by the Seawolves, making the score 24-23. However, Hull put down a kill to end the contest.
"I was proud of the way we fought through it, but, in the end, it was a loss and we have to learn from it and get better," said Luyties.
UCSD plays at San Francisco State Saturday at 7 p.m. The Gators (5-5, 3-2) defeated Cal Poly Pomona in five sets Friday.
