NO. 20 BASEBALL TRAVELS NORTH FOR CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
After sitting it out a year ago, Coach Eric Newman's 20th-ranked Baseball team is heading to Stockton this weekend for the CCAA Championship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark...The Tritons, who have won this event five times, are in the tourney for the second time in Newman's three years at the helm (UCSD won the tournament in his first season)…They bring in a 32-14 overall record after downing Cal State San Bernardino three times in a four-game series last weekend and will go in as the third seed...That earns them a 7:00 PM match-up with second seed Chico State (37-11) this Thursday…Regular season champion Sonoma State squares off against Cal Poly Pomona in the double elimination tournament's other first round duel…The championship game is set for Sunday.
UCSD opened the regular season-ending set with CSUSB by winning a pair of single games, Thursday (9-2) and Friday (9-6) in San Bernardino…In game one, the Tritons opened up a 6-0 gap with third baseman Troy Cruz (3-for-5) and right fielder Brandon Shirley (2-for-4) leading the attack…The pair combined to score three runs and drive in five…Soph right hander Justin Donatella, the first of five hurlers, upped his season record to 7-2…The next night, behind junior lefty Trevor Scott, UCSD posted a pair of three-run innings and held off a late Coyote comeback try for the victory…Scott went seven quality innings to record his sixth win…Cruz and seniors Garrett Tuck and Justin Rahn each had two hits with the latter plating a pair as well…Back in La Jolla Saturday, UCSD won its third game of the series and sixth straight overall when it exploded for five seventh inning runs to erase a 4-0 deficit en route to 6-4 final in the first half of a doubleheader…Senior Nick La Face's bases loaded triple was the key blow in the comeback and senior David Hart got his third win in relief…The Coyotes turned the tables in game two, scoring two in the fifth and another pair in the seventh for a 4-3 triumph after trailing 3-0…UCSD had just four hits and Cruz was the hard luck loser on the hill…It was a particularly bitter loss because the Tritons' first three wins put them in position to tie for the CCAA regular season title with the combination of a closing victory and a Sonoma State win over Chico State Sunday…The Seawolves held up its end of the deal but ended up in first place alone with UCSD's defeat… Click here to get the latest on Triton Baseball.
NO. 12 POLO WINS PLAY-IN GAME, HEADING TO L.A. FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
After sweeping aside Pomona-Pitzer, 13-9, in last Saturday's “play-in” game, Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's Women's Water Polo team heads to Los Angeles this Friday for the eight-team NCAA Championships, hosted by USC…There, the No. 12 Tritons (27-10) will face second-seeded UCLA (25-4) in the first round…Game time is noon at USC's Utengsu Aquatic Center…It will mark UCSD”s third trip to the NCAA Championships in the last four years…Kreutzkamp & Co. placed sixth at last year's event in Boston.
Saturday's clash with Pomona-Pitzer proved tougher than anticipated…The Tritons got a four-goal performance from two-time WWPA Player of the Year Sarah Lizotte and matching three-goal hat tricks from sophomores Alexis Wieseler and Julia Kirkland but were up just one goal, 7-6, at intermission and didn't fully put the Sagehens away until the final quarter…To learn more about Triton Women's Water Polo, click here.

PAIR OF SECONDS FOR UCSD AT CCAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Second place was the order of the day Saturday for the Track & Field teams as both the UCSD men and women finished as runner-ups in the team standings at the 2014 CCAA Championships, hosted by UCSD at Triton Track & Field Stadium…For Coach Darcy Ahner's women, it matched last year's conference finish while Coach Tony Salerno's men moved up one notch from 2013…This Saturday, UCSD's individual NCAA Championship hopefuls will get one last shot at reaching or bettering NCAA qualifying marks at the Occidental Invitational.
At the CCAA Championships, the men's squad racked up 177.5 pts., highlighted by gold medal performances from junior Nash Howe in the javelin (225-4), redshirt freshman Dan Golubovic in the decathlon (6,898 pts.) and senior Kellen Levy in the 10,000 (31:12.33)…For Howe and Levy, it marked a second straight CCAA crown while Golubovic's point total was a stadium record and No.2 all-time at UCSD…Other notables for the Triton men were junior Keith Rose who grabbed second in both the 100 (10.72) and 200 (21.30), breaking his own UCSD standard in the latter, as well as silver medal winners Jared Senese (800/1:52.86), Carlos Bojorquez (1,500/3:55.29) and Markus Woods (400 hurdles/53.27).
The UCSD women piled up 188.66 pts. to finish just nine short of first place Chico State…It was the fifth second place result in a row for the Tritons…They locked up a pair of individual titles in the process as junior Paige Hughes ran away from the field, posting a 16-second triumph in the 10,000 (37:32.91) and fellow junior Sabrina Pimentel captured the 800 in 2:10.95…Pimentel was second in the event as a freshman…Sophomore Chantia Justice landed at 39-7.75 to snag second in the triple jump, leading a 2-3-4-5 UCSD finish…Defending champ Kristin Sato was third…Meanwhile, senior Lauren Irish was third in the 400 hurdles with a personal best 61.04 and Lauren Lopez earned CCAA Female Freshman of the Year honors after taking third in the 400 (56.05) and running a leg on the Tritons' second place 4x400 relay team (4:47.08)… Click here for complete Track & Field updates.

NCAA WEST REGIONAL BECKONS FOR SOFTBALL
Following a two-and-out performance at last weekend's CCAA Championship Tournament in Stockton, Coach Patti Gerckens' Softball team gets an immediate shot at redemption when it travels to St. George, UT for NCAA West Regional play…The Tritons (33-16) open against CCAA foe Humboldt State (44-13) and the other first round contest will feature host Dixie State and Central Washington...The second section of the double elimination regional tournament will be hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay...The winners from each site will convene the following weekend in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional with the winner advancing to the eight-team NCAA Championships (May 22-26) in Salem, VA, the same locale where UCSD captured the 2011 national crown.
In Stockton at the CCAA Tournament last weekend, the unranked Tritons jumped out to a first inning, 1-0, edge on No. 6 Humboldt State but a pair of two-out runs in the third proved the difference in a 2-1 defeat…Sophomore Alexis Edwards tossed a complete game five-hitter and sophomore McKenna Clewett had two of UCSD's five hits…In Saturday's elimination game, the Tritons found plenty of offense—12 hits—and top-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay made five errors, but the Otters zipped out to an early five-run lead and UCSD could never quite dig itself out of that hole, falling 10-8…Sophomore Callie Grant went 4-for-5 out of the leadoff slot and UCSD got within striking distance three times but couldn't come up with the breakthrough hits…The final opportunity came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh…The loss broke a string of three consecutive years in which Gerckens' club had reached the final day of the CCAA event…Humboldt State won the tournament...For more Softball information, click here.

Filling out the roster for Ragan will be senior Lewis Simon, UCSD's top finisher (eighth) at the CCAA tourney, junior Jay Lim and sophomores Clayton Yamaguchi, Daniel Yang and Jeff Roseth…Yamaguchi was an All-CCAA selection…The Tritons placed 18th at the 2013 NCAA Regional...The last time UCSD was represented at the national championship tournament was 2011 when Keith Okasaki went as an individual…For all Golf updates, click here.
BIG EASTERN REGATTA OFFERS BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN'S CREW
Coach Colin Truex and the Women's Rowing team conclude regular season festivities on Philadelphia's historic Schuylkill River this weekend at the annual Dad Vail Regatta…Truex will field varsity eight and varsity four shells in a last ditch effort to garner a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships…UCSD will go with the same lineups used at the recent WIRA Championships.
The V-8 will be part of a 10-team lineup…Two heats will be run Friday with winners advancing directly to Saturday afternoon's grand final…The other eight boats will drop into the repechage from which the top four will round out the V-8 grand final roster…The V-4 will feature 18 contestants that will be broken down into three six-boat heats Friday with top two from each qualifying for Saturday's grand final…The field will be formidable in both races but UCSD's focus will be on the top two Division II teams from the East—Mercyhurst and Philadelphia University—both potential NCAA qualifiers as well…Flooding caused by recent storms could have an effect on the competition…Click here to get the latest Women's Rowing news.
