BASEBALL STOPPED BY CHICO STATE IN NCAA WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The No. 15 Baseball team, bidding for the program's third trip to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, NC, came up one step short last weekend, falling, 3-1, to ninth-ranked Chico State in Sunday's championship round of the NCAA West Regional...Coach Eric Newman's Tritons, seeded first in the Regional tourney, wound up 38-16 on the season and won a record sixth CCAA Championship Tournament along the way…Both of their losses in the Regional event came against the second-seeded Wildcats.

Behind seven and a third sterling innings from junior starter Trevor Scott, the Tritons clipped Sonoma State, 3-0,  in Thursday's NCAA Regional opener…Scott surrendered just three hits in collecting win No. 7 and UCSD got all the runs it needed when redshirt freshman Brandon Shirley tripled to the gap in left center to drive home a pair in the bottom of the seventh…There was very little drama in Friday's second game as Newman's club erupted for 22 hits, scoring 15 in the first four innings, to rout Cal Poly Pomona, 20-5…Senior Justin Rahn went 4-for-6 with two homers (one a grand slam), walked twice and drove in eight…Another senior, third baseman Garrett Tuck had four hits and drove in four and first sacker Michael Mann was 5-for-5…Sophomore Troy Cruz started and tossed five innings, accruing his eighth win of the year.

In an exciting and entertaining winner's bracket contest Saturday morning, the Tritons rebounded from an early, 3-0, deficit to take a 5-3 lead before eventually falling victim to Chico State's own comeback, 6-5…Four Tritons—Tuck, Cruz, Erik Lewis and Jack Larsen—had two hits each…The CCAA regular season champion Wildcats had just one more hit than UCSD (12-11) but five went for extra bases including two home runs in the second inning…In a Saturday night elimination clash with Cal Baptist, a bases loaded double by senior Nick La Face keyed a seven-run second inning that propelled the Tritons to a14-5 triumph…Shirley went 4-for-5 and drove in three but senior Dan Kolodin was the hero of the night, turning in his best outing of the year, a six-inning start in which he gave up just one run.

UCSD needed two wins over Chico State  in Sunday's championship round to achieve its goal of reaching the eight-team NCAA Division II Championships but was unable to get past the first, falling, 3-1, in a taut thriller that has become pretty much the norm when these two outifts tangle…In this one, Chico State went up, 1-0, in the third inning vs. Scott, who was coming back on just two days rest…UCSD knotted it in the sixth on a two-out Tuck single that plated Mann…But the Wildcats came right back with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh and that was more than the Tritons could overcome…Three UCSD pitchers held Chico to just eight hits…Mann had a pair of knocks for the Tritons but they ended up leaving 10 runners stranded…Click here to get all of your Baseball news.

TRACK & FIELD SENDS FIVE TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MICHIGAN
Coaches Tony Salerno and Darcy Ahner will have five athletes with them when they depart for Allendale, MI and the 2014 NCAA D-II Track & Field Championships which start Thursday on the campus of Grand Valley State…The three-day meet concludes Saturday…With javelin ace Nash Howe scoring the only points, the UCSD men finished 46th in last year's meet at Pueblo, CO while the Triton women went scoreless.

Howe will be heading back to the national stage this year with a top-seeded mark of 229-3 in his specialty…Junior Anthony Capitulo, Howe's javelin teammate also earned a berth as did middle distance standouts Carlos Bojorquez (So./1,500) and Sabrina Pimentel (Jr./800) and redshirt freshman decathlete Dan Golubovic…Besides  Howe, Pimentel is the only member of the group with NCAA experience…She was part of UCSD's seventh place 4x400 relay quartet as a freshman and placed ninth in the 800 as a soph…Pimentel, Howe and Golubovic won CCAA titles in their specialties two weeks ago…For more Track & Field news, click here.

MEN'S TENNIS MAKE FIRST ROUND NCAA EXIT
After dealing with rain and several weather-related delays, Coach Timmer Willing's No. 13 Men's Tennis squad saw its season evaporate in the first round of the NCAA Division II Championships in Altamonte Springs, FL last week…Senior Max  Jiganti and junior Kona Luu teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 but the Tritons trailed Midwestern State (TX), 2-1, following doubles…Junior Horea Porutiu gave UCSD a little momentum, recording a straight set victory at No. 5 singles, but the No. 17 Mustangs rang up three singles wins of their own to clinch the match at 5-2…The loss left the Tritons 15-10 for the year…Click here to stay current on Men's Tennis.

MEN'S V-8 COMES UP SHORT OF IRA BERTH; FRESHMEN WIN AT WESTERN INVITATIONAL
The 2014 season came to a premature conclusion for Coach Zach Johnson's Men's Rowing team last Saturday on Lake Natoma, outside Sacramento, as the Tritons' varsity eight placed third at the four-boat Western Invitational…The top two crews advance to the IRA National Championships, the last weekend of May in Princeton, NJ…UCSD's V-8 finished nine seconds behind front-running Gonzaga with USD sandwiched in between…The Triton JV-8 was also third but the freshman boat swamped runner-up USD by nearly 10 seconds, posting a winning time of 6:19.2 for the 2,000 m…To get more information on Men's Crew, click here.
