TRITONS ROLL TO CCAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE; TO HOST NCAA REGIONALS
It's on to the NCAA West Regional for the No. 18 Baseball team after taking its sixth CCAA Tournament Championship last weekend in Stockton—and even better news, Coach Eric Newman & Co. will be hosting the six-team event starting Thursday at Triton Ballpark…UCSD will bring a 35-14 ledger into NCAA play and open up vs. Sonoma State at 7:00 PM on day one…The other first round match-ups are Chico State vs. Dixie State and Cal Baptist vs. Cal Poly Pomona…For more tournament information, check ucsdtritons.com.
A late comeback earned UCSD a 5-3 win over Chico State in last Thursday's conference tourney opener…Down, 3-2, the Tritons tied it in the eighth on Brandon Shirley's solo homer and won it in the ninth on a two-run double by senior Garrett Tuck, his third hit of the night…Chad Reiser, who worked just a third of an inning, got credit for the win with senior Scott Zeman garnering his eighth save…The Tritons won a berth in the championship round by knocking off Cal Poly Pomona, 5-4, in a crazy, 11-inning affair Friday night…A three-run seventh inning had UCSD riding a 4-2 lead but the Broncos stormed back to tie it in the ninth…Then, in the 11th, senior Nick La Face's third hit, a walk-off double that scored Erik Lewis, was decisive in the Tritons' favor…Zeman, UCSD's fifth hurler, went three innings and came away with his fourth victory.
There were plenty of plot swings in Saturday's final game against Chico State as well…Newman's squad was cruising along with a cushy, 6-0, edge when the Wildcats erupted for seven runs…The Tritons calmly knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh and regained the lead in the seventh when Lewis singles home freshman Jack Larsen…Junior Brett Levy had three hits and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three…La Face and Lewis chipped in with two knocks each…Right hander Justin Donatella snagged his eighth win, coming out of the bullpen to throw the final 3.2 innings…La Face was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Donatella, Lewis, Levy, Tuck and Shirley… The sixth title is the most by any conference school…The last Triton CCAA championship came in 2012, Newman's first year at the helm.Click here to get all the latest on Baseball.

SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM NCAA PLAY
After an encouraging start, the NCAA West Regional proved to be the end of the line for the 2014 Softball team as the Tritons were eliminated from post-season play in St. George, UT last Saturday…Coach Patti Gerckens' troops concluded the year at 34-18.
Coming in as the third seed at the St. George site, hosted by Dixie State, UCSD displayed its bats and its mettle in last Friday's Regional opener, stunning second seed Humboldt State, 10-6, in extra innings…The Tritons, who battered Lumberjack pitching for 17 hits in snapping an 11-game losing streak against HSU, were poised to win it in regulation, up 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh…But Humboldt struck for four runs to stay alive, only to see UCSD respond with four of its own in the top of the eighth…Sophomore Alexis Edwards went the distance for her 19th victory…Outfielders Kirsten Willmon and Amani Proctor and shortstop Mya Romero had three hits each.
UCSD's hopes of advancing were dealt a blow in Saturday morning's, 5-3, winner's bracket loss to Dixie State…At 3-0 through four innings, things looked positive for the Tritons but the Red Storm strung together five of their eight hits in the fifth frame, scoring four runs, and added another for insurance in the seventh…Senior Jenn Manuel got tagged with the loss…Soph second baseman McKenna Clewett had half of UCSD's six hits and center fielder Callie Grant scored a pair…The roof caved in on the Tritons in Saturday's second game as a 15-hit Central Washington attack produced a 10-1 decision and knocked UCSD out of the post-season…Click here for more on Triton Softball.

Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's Women's Water Polo team, ranked 12th nationally and seeded seventh going in, finished eighth at last weekend's NCAA Championships hosted by USC in Los Angeles…The Tritons fell, 9-8, to No. 8 Indiana in Sunday's seventh place game…The defeat left UCSD with an final mark of 27-13.
In Friday's defense-oriented tournament opener, UCSD gave No. 2 UCLA a battle, trailing just 5-3 with momentum on its side in the third period, but were unable to hold off the talented Bruins, falling, 12-8…Senior Sarah Lizotte and sophomore Alexis Wieseler registered three-goal hat tricks and sophomore goalie Courtney Miller rejected 11 UCLA shots.
Saturday's, 17-11, round two loss against No. 6 UC Irvine had a different flavor but similar results…In a contest where defense played second fiddle, the Tritons, behind five goals from Wieseler and a 9-for-11 conversion rate on man-ups, fought back from a four-goal deficit to narrow the gap to 11-9 heading into the final eight minutes…But the wheels fell off there as UCI scored early and often to run away, 17-11…Lizotte and junior Jolene Guiliana added two goals apiece…The Tritons came out a bit flat Sunday and paid for it against Indiana…The Hoosiers raced out to a 4-1 advantage and led most of the way…UCSD tied it at eight midway through the final stanza but when IU took the lead back, Kreutzkamp's unit came up empty on three offensive forays…Lizotte again provided the lion's share of the offense with three goals and a pair of sparkling assists…For all Women's Water Polo information, click here.

Still right in the hunt for a berth in the NCAA Division II Championships early in the final round of last week's NCAA South Central/West Regional in Austin, TX, the Golf team slipped late to finish 16th in the 18-team field, ending their 2014 campaign…Coach Jim Ragan's squad, which finished at 919 for the 54 holes on the 6,909, par 72 Grey Rock Golf Club layout, was 11th after day one, moved into a tie for eighth after two rounds and was sitting sixth six holes into the final round before disaster struck…It was the Tritons third consecutive NCAA appearance and first under Ragan…They earned their way into the NCAA field with a third place performance at the CCAA Championships.
