UCSD HOSTS CCAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND
For the first time since 2010, the Track & Field team will host the CCAA Championships, this Thursday through Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium…The UCSD women were second and the men third at last year's league meet in Turlock, the third consecutive time the two teams have placed in those positions…The last time UCSD hosted, both teams wound up second, ending a run of five straight conference crowns on the women's side.
More than 1,000 competitors were on hand for last Saturday's Triton Invitational and UCSD athletes turned in their fair share of impressive performances for Coaches Tony Salerno and Darcy Ahner…Sophomore Kristin Sato won the triple jump with a leap of 39-3, bettering her NCAA provisional qualifying mark…Also registering NCAA provisional standards were freshman Markus Woods in the 400 hurdles (53.88) and the women's 4x400 relay foursome of Sabrina Pimentel, Marisa Padilla, Lauren Lopez and Lauren Irish (3:48.50)…Meanwhile, senior Kellen Levy clocked 3:55.52 which left him third in the 1,500 field…Former UCSD star and 2012 Olympian (representing Sri Lanka) Sonali Merrill won the women's 400 hurdles handily in 59.76 and Olympic gold medalist Ashton Eaton took the men's version of the same event in 50.01…Click here for all Track & Field news.

SOFTBALL TAKES THREE FROM DOMINGUEZ HILLS; OPENS CCAA TOURNEY PLAY FRIDAY IN STOCKTON
For the fourth consecutive year, the Softball team will head to Stockton for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament…Coach Patti Gerckens' Tritons, sporting a 33-14 overall mark, come in as the third seed and will match-up with second-seeded Humboldt State (43-13) in Friday's first round at Arnaiz Field (7:00 PM)…Top seed Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State will square off in the other opening round contest…The winners will clash Saturday at 2:00 PM with the losers moving on to a 4:30 PM meeting…The double elimination event will conclude Sunday with the winner garnering an automatic NCAA Regional bid…UCSD finished second to Humboldt State at last season's CCAA tourney and were swept two weekends ago in a four-game series in Arcata.
Pitching was the key as UCSD stifled Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-2, 4-0, in last Friday's series-opening twinbill…Triton hurlers Alexis Edwards and Jennifer Manuel did not surrender a single earned run on the afternoon, giving up a combined eight hits and two walks…Senior Caitlin Brown squeezed home Mya Romero with the go-ahead run in the fourth inning of game one and center fielder Callie Grant had two hits, scored a run and drove in another in game two…Saturday, after Dominguez Hills roughed up Edwards (18-8), 3-2, for its only win of the weekend, the Tritons bounced back, behind Manuel's complete game five-hitter, with a 2-0 victory…The sixth inning was pivotal…The Toros looked ready to break open a scoreless tie with the bases jammed in the top half but a full extension, leaping catch in the gap by Grant squelched their opportunity…In the bottom of the inning, soph catcher Katie Saunders legged out an infield single to open things up, moved to second on a sacrifice, went to third on a Grant single and came home on the back end of a delayed double steal…Grant came across with an insurance marker moments later…Click here to keep up with all Softball news.

REGULAR SEASON BASEBALL FINALE HERE VS. SAN BERNARDINO SATURDAY
Coach Eric Newman's Baseball team, coming off a dominating doubleheader sweep of non-conference foe Azusa Pacific last Saturday, brings the curtain down on the 2014 regular season this week with a home-and-home four-game set against CCAA rival Cal State San Bernardino (12-33-1/10-25-1)…The two teams will have single skirmishes Thursday and Friday in San Bernardino before closing it out with a Saturday doubleheader in La Jolla…No. 25 UCSD is now 29-13 overall and its 23-9 CCAA ledger puts it third in the conference standings…The Tritons have already secured one of the four spots in the CCAA Championship Tournament which starts next Friday in Stockton but could finish anywhere from second to fourth pending the results of the final weekend…The 1-2 clubs in the league, Sonoma State and Chico State face off four times as well…CSUSB is 10th on the CCAA table..
Saturday afternoon, the Tritons held off a late Azusa Pacific rally to upend the Cougars, 11-7, in the first game of their doubleheader…Southpaw Trevor Scott went five innings in picking up his fifth victory and left with a 10-2 lead…Central in UCSD's 14-hit attack was senior Nick La Face who went 4-for-4 and reached base five times, scoring four runs and driving in four …He had a single, two doubles and a home run…Left fielder Justin Rahn added three knocks…The Tritons got off to another quick start in the second game, scoring six runs in the first two frames, and this time didn't look back, blitzing APU, 16-0…Sophomore Troy Cruz got the start, logged six shutout innings and earned win No. 7 on the year…Overall, UCSD pounded another 14 hits with four players posting multi-hit games…Rahn and freshman Jack Larsen blasted home runs…To get your Baseball fix, click here.

Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's 13th-ranked Women's Water Polo squad ran roughshod over the five-team field to win its second Western Water Polo Assn. (WWPA) championship in a row and third in four years last weekend at Canyonview Pool…The title catapults the 26-10 Tritons into the NCAA Championship field as the WWPA's automatic qualifier...When the NCAA announced its 10-team field today, UCSD was seeded seventh and will now host 10th seed Pomona-Pitzer in a play-in contest Saturday at Canyonview...Game time and ticket information is expected to be announced Tuesday...The eight-team main draw of the NCAA Championships is set for May 10-11 at USC.
Four goals by junior Jolene Guiliana and seven saves by sophomore goalie Courtney Miller powered UCSD past Sonoma State, 14-5, in Saturday's CCAA semi-final match-up…Despite some uncharacteristic sloppy play, the Tritons had an 8-2 advantage at intermission and padded it in the second half to reach their fifth straight conference title game in the Kreutzkamp era…UCSD left no question in Sunday's championship final, scoring the first seven goals and basically putting on a clinic in drubbing Cal State East Bay, 16-3…Guiliana, selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, connected for five more goals and the Tritons' all-time leading scorer Sarah Lizotte chipped in with four…Miller stopped 10 shots in the cage…Lizotte and Miller joined Guiliana on the all-tournament first team and senior Melissa Bartow was named to the second team…Earlier in the week, Lizotte was named WWPA Player of the Year for the second consecutive time and was a first team selection along with Bartow and Miller…Guiliana and soph Alexis Wieseler were second team choices and Julia Kirkland picked up third team accolades… Freshman Lauren Boyer was chosen as the conference's Newcomer of the Year…Click here for updated Women's Water Polo information.

GOLFERS CLAIM THIRD AT CCAA TOURNEY; EARN THIRD STRAIGHT NCAA NOD
Coach Jim Ragan's Golf team will now turn its focus on the NCAA South Central/West Regionals (May 5-7) in Austin, TX…Ragan's squad is seeded seventh out of 10 teams from the West Region…The Tritons solidified their third consecutive NCAA berth with a third place finish at last week's CCAA Championships in Stockton, CA…It tied UCSD's best-ever performance in the conference tourney...Two of the foes they finished in front of (Chico State & Sonoma State) are seeded ahead of them in the Regional field.
At the CCAA's, UCSD fired an 18-over par 882 at Brookside Country Club in finishing behind Cal State Stanislaus (859) and Cal State Monterey Bay (876)…They were one up on fourth place Chico State…Senior Lewis Simon carded a three-over 219 on the windy, par 72, 6,720-yd. layout…That put him in a tie for eighth place…Junior Jay Lim and sophomore Daniel Yang were part of a four-way tie in 10th spot at 221…Another sophomore Clayton Yamaguchi, who was UCSD's lone representative on the 2014 all-conference squad, tied for 24th at 228…For more information on the golf team, click here.

WOMEN'S CREW PUTS FOUR BOATS IN GRAND FINALS AT WIRA
The good news from the 2014 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Assn. (WIRA) Championships, held last weekend on Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento, was that the Women's Rowing team placed all four boats in Sunday's grand final…Less satisfying for Head Coach Colin Truex was that only one, the varsity four, was able to reach the podium…That leaves only the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta outside of Philadelphia, May 9-10, for UCSD to produce the kind of performance that Truex believes is within its reach.
Sunday, the V-4, consisting of Emma Purcell, Kat Tehaney, Nicole Arkosy , Hollie Dunn and coxswain Katrina Kettler hit the line in 7:59.95, 12 seconds back of first place Western Washington and six back of runner-up Humboldt State…The varsity eight and second varsity eight both recorded fourth place finishes while the novice eight was sixth but beaten only by Division I crews…Click here for the latest on Women's Rowing.
