POLO WINS HARPER CUP OVER SDSU; SEEKS WWPA CROWN THIS WEEKEND
Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's 14th-ranked Women's Water Polo team hosts the 2014 Western Water Polo Assn. (WWPA) Championships Friday through Sunday at Canyonview Pool…The 24-10 Tritons come in as the top-seed and, as such, have earned a first round bye, meaning they will open tourney play at 3:00 PM Saturday against the winner of that morning's loser's bracket clash…The tournament champion, to be crowned Sunday afternoon (1:00 PM start), advances to the NCAA Championships, May 9-11, at USC.
UCSD comes into the WWPA event on a high after toppling No. 19 San Diego State, 8-5, in the 13th annual Harper Cup last Friday night at Canyonview…The Tritons, who had lost the first 12 editions of the crosstown cup rivalry, stormed out to a 5-0 first half lead and never let the Aztecs get closer than two goals…The game's MVP, senior Leah Gonzales scored a pair of goals and added an assist…Junior Jolene Guiliana and sophomores Alexis Wieseler and Julia Kirkland also connected for two goals each…Soph goalie Courtney Miller was stellar in the cage, rejecting 13 Aztec shots and displaying catlike quickness off her line to stifle several SDSU forays in front of the cage…For all Women's Water Polo updates, click here.

BASEBALL CLINCHES CCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH; APU HERE FOR SATURDAY TWINBILL
The 18th-ranked Baseball team struggled to split a four-game series at San Francisco State last weekend but there was a silver lining as its two wins, coupled with a Saturday Cal State East Bay loss assured a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament…The Tritons will now take a week's respite from conference hostilities when they host D-II regional foe Azusa Pacific for a Saturday doubleheader…Coach Eric Newman & Co. sport a 27-13 overall record after last week's tussle in San Francisco and find themselves third in the league standings at 23-9, two games behind front-running Chico State...They close out the conference regular season next week with a four-game series vs. Cal State San Bernardino…The CCAA Championship Tournament, May 8-11, in Stockton, will feature the top four teams in the conference regular season standings.
UCSD rallied for two ninth inning runs but came up one short last Thursday in dropping the series opener to San Francisco State, 7-6…Freshman center fielder Jack Larsen (four hits) was the offensive star as the Tritons outhit the Gators, 13-9…A relatively rocky outing by ace Justin Donatella and four errors doomed Newman's club…The two teams split a Friday doubleheader…UCSD smashed SFSU, 17-3, in game one, pounding 18 hits…Redshirt freshman Brandon Shirley's leadoff homer sparked an 11-hit, 11-run explosion in the ninth…Justin Rahn accumulated five RBIs…Lefty Trevor Scott went six innings while picking up his fourth victory…Sophomore Troy Cruz had three hits in game one and two of the Tritons' four in a 3-1 loss in the night cap…Both squads scored once in the first but starter Blake Fassler saw a solid outing spoiled when SFSU plated a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth…UCSD left nine runners stranded…The Tritons earned a series split Sunday, racking up 14 hits in a 6-4 decision…UCSD parlayed four hits and a Gator error into three fourth inning runs that proved to be the difference…Cruz went six innings on the hill to secure his sixth victory while Shirley and junior second baseman Erik Lewis, batting 1-2 in the lineup, had identical lines with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI each…Click here to find the latest Baseball news.
