TRITON HOOPSTERS' FINAL WEEKEND SPLIT EARNS TOURNEY BERTH
Coach Heidi VanDerveer's Women's Basketball team will be heading to the CCAA Championship Tournament at Citizen's Business Bank Arena in Ontario for the second consecutive year, facing an opening round date with Cal State L.A. (16-10) Thursday night…After concluding the regular season schedule with a  1-1 road weekend, the Tritons are now 16-10 overall and finished in a four-way tie for third place on the CCAA charts at 13-9…They will be seeded fifth going into the tourney and the winner of Thursday night's clash will advance to Friday's semi-final at 5:30 or 8:00 PM…The Tritons won both encounters with Cal State L.A. this season.

Senior Megan Perry poured in 20 points (six on three-pointers), handed out six assists and pulled down four rebounds as UCSD turned away host Cal State L.A., 68-61, to clinch its berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament last Friday night…The Tritons grabbed the lead four minutes into the first half and the Golden Eagles were never able to get it back…Senior Erin Dautremont and junior McKennan Bertsch posted identical 10 pt./eight rebound lines, pacing UCSD to a dominating +15 margin on the glass…Junior point guard Miranda Seto chipped in with 11 markers.

Subpar (27%) first half shooting and rebounding (-7) put the Tritons in a 17-pt. halftime deficit that they were never able to escape in a 71-61 regular season-ending loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday…Backcourt running mates Seto (15 pts.) and Stephanie Yano (11) each logged double figures in the points column but 3-for-16 shooting from behind the arc and a Toro offense that registered 19 assists on 21 baskets spelled defeat for UCSD…A win would have put VanDerveer's cagers in a tie for second with Chico State…Looking for more information on Women's Basketball?...Click here.

NARROW LOSS KNOCKS MEN'S BASKETBALL OUT OF POST-SEASON
Coach Eric Olen's Men's Basketball team ended the 2013-14 season with a pair of road games both decided by one point (one a win and one a loss) and that type of narrow margin wound up leaving them on the outside looking in when the six-team CCAA Championship Tournament field was determined…Sporting an overall record of 15-11, the Tritons' 11-11 CCAA ledger resulted in a seventh place finish, one game behind both San Francisco State and Cal State L.A.

Despite shooting 52% from the floor and 55% from three-point range, the Tritons wound up on the short end of a 71-70 score at Cal State L.A. Friday night…UCSD led for all but seven seconds of the final 14:46, unfortunately, it was the last seven seconds…Up, 35-33, at intermission, Olen's cagers pushed the margin to seven with 6:23 remaining but a 12-4 closing run by the Golden Eagles, capped by a pair of free throws in the waning moments, sealed the deal…Four Tritons—James McCann (15), Adam Klie (14), Hunter Walker (13) and Treavon Francis (11)—scored in double digits but the Tritons were out-rebounded (38-26) and hurt by 15 turnovers.

Led by sophomore Drew Dyer's double double (18 pts./10 rebounds), the Tritons held off host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 69-68, in Saturday's season finale…UCSD shot 51% and had a slight edge on the boards but nearly let a 14-pt. second half lead slip away as the Toros charged back to deadlock the score with 2:40 to go--but an old-fashioned three-point play by Walker proved to be decisive in the end…Redshirt freshman Aleks Lipovic netted 15 points, Klie had 11 and McCann capped a standout career with 10 assists, bumping his four-year total to 469, best ever during UCSD's Division II tenure and second all-time behind Darvin Jackson's 496...Click here to get complete coverage of Men's Basketball.

BASEBALL BACK IN ACTION WITH FOUR-GAME SET VS. DOMINGUEZ HILLS
After a frustrating and ultimately disappointing game of cat-and-mouse with the weather last weekend, Coach Eric Newman's Baseball team looks to get back on the field this weekend with a four-game home-and-home series against Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-4/4-2)…The two teams will square off in single games at Triton Ballpark Thursday and Friday night before traveling to Carson for a Saturday doubleheader…Last weekend's scheduled four-game home set with Sonoma State was canceled due to persistent precipitation...UCSD remains 7-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play…The Tritons are seventh in the CCAA standings while Dominguez Hills is tied for third...Among the early season statistical leaders for Newman are outfielder Brandon Shirley (.429) and catcher Nick LaFace (.357), 1-2 in batting average, second baseman Erik Lewis (11) and shortstop Troy Cruz (11) who lead in runs and RBIs respectively and the pitching duo of Justin Donatella and Blake Fassler, both holding two victories with the former tops among the starters with an ERA of 1.53…Click here to get full Baseball information.

SOFTBALL GETS FIRST ROAD TEST OF '14 AT SONOMA STATE

Still perched in first place after sitting out last weekend because of rainy conditions in La Jolla, Coach Patti Gerckens' Softball team takes to the road for the first time this season for a four-game CCAA series at Sonoma State (9-7/3-7) starting with a doubleheader Friday…UCSD, now 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play, is one game up on both Cal State Dominguez Hills and defending loop champion Humboldt State...Coming into the week, Sonoma State finds itself ninth in the 10-team league…The Tritons were scheduled to  host Cal State Monterey Bay for four contests last weekend but the series was canceled after Friday's downpour was followed by another deluge Saturday morning…The games will not be re-scheduled…To stay current on Triton Softball, click here.

TWENTY-SEVEN SWIMMERS, DIVERS NCAA BOUND
Last Wednesday, Coaches Corrie Falcon and Matt Macedo found out they will be taking a contingent of 27  swimmers and divers to the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships next week in Geneva, OH…The travel party, leaving Sunday, will include 13 in both men's and women's divisions as well as one relay alternate on the men's side.

The Triton women's roster of 12 swimmers (and sophomore diver Allyson Cohen) will consist of seniors Anji Shakya, Sandy Hon and Erika Rodman, juniors Jaclyn Amog and Sierra Robbins, sophomores Collen Daley and Naomi Thomas and freshman Jaimie Bryan, Sierra Gage, Austine Lee, Natalie Tang and Catherine Woo…Shakya, the 2013 national champion in the 200 freestyle, and Hon will be making their fourth straight trip to the meet…The UCSD men's lineup features 10 swimmers and three divers…The 2011 NCAA champ in the 200 breaststroke, Nick Korth, and Reid McCallum are the lone seniors…Juniors Jack Galvan and Sean Malley, sophomores Cole Heale, Paul Li and Kyle Nadler and freshman Sasha Mitrushina, Chandler Pourvahidi and Zach Yong round at the swimming squad…The Triton divers are senior Luke Calkins (a four-time qualifier along with Korth and McCallum), junior Adam Springer and sophomore Garet Webster…Freshman Julian Jacobs will travel as the relay alternate…The women are ranked fifth nationally and the men ninth going in…For a full Swimming & Diving update, click here.

UCSD TO HOST ALL-CAL TRACK& FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

WOMEN'S WATER POLO SPLITS ON ROAD VS. MPSF FOES; CLAREMONT TOURNEY UP NEXT
Continuing what will be a string of 18 consecutive games away from Canyonview Pool, the No. 11 Women's Water Polo team competes at the Claremont Convergence tournament this weekend…The Friday/Saturday event will include match-ups with Occidental, Claremont, No. 13 Hawaii and Pomona-Pitzer…Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's troops boast an 11-7 ledger after going 1-1 in a pair of road outings against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) adversaries last week.

Stellar defense and fourth period goals by senior Leah Gonzales and junior Jolene Guiliana lifted UCSD to a 6-4 victory at No. 12 Long Beach State Friday night…The Tritons jumped out to an early two-goal margin but the clubs were knotted at four heading into the final eight minutes…Gonzales and Guiliana both finished with two goals and sophomore goalie Courtney Miller stopped seven shots…The final period was the undoing for the Tritons Saturday as No. 6 UC Irvine blew open a one-goal game with five unanswered tallies in the fourth period for a 13-7 win...Guiliana racked up three more goals and sophomore Alexis Weiseler added two…Extra man situations continued to be concernable for Kreutzkamp…After missing on all six tries at Long Beach, the Tritons converted just 2-of-12 against the Anteaters…For all things Women's Water Polo, click here.

MPSF ROAD MATCH-UPS LOOM FOR MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Another Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) road gauntlet awaits the Men's Volleyball team this week as Coach Kevin Ring's spikers travel to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (10-5) Friday and on to No. 3 UCLA (13-5) 24 hours later.

Behind a career  high 18 kills from senior Mike Brunsting and junior setter Garrett Dempsey's 46 assists, the Tritons snagged their first win of 2014 Saturday night, taking down Grand Canyon in a tough five sets, 3-2…Two of Brunsting's kills came as UCSD raced out to a 6-1 lead in the decisive fifth game…The feel good story of the night was written by libero Tanner Howard, elevated from non-roster status to starter in a matter of days due to a rash of injuries, the redshirt freshman had 16 digs and a perfect passing ledger on 27 chances…The outcome was different the next night, however, as No. 6 UC Santa Barbara chalked up 10 aces and its blocking and defensive pressure resulted in a 3-0 Triton loss…Click here to find the latest Men's Volleyball information.

MEN'S TENNIS HOSTS TOP-RANKED BARRY FRIDAY

Last Monday, buoyed by wins at Nos. 1-3 singles, the Tritons won their third consecutive dual outing, bouncing former CCAA rival Cal State L.A., 6-3…Sophs Kyra Scott (No. 1) and Paula Chou (No. 2) won in three and two sets respectively in singles and teamed up to grab a point at No. 1 doubles as well, while freshman Nava Nowamooz won 7-6 in the third at No. 3…Wednesday at Division I Cal State Fullerton, UCSD never got untracked, suffering a lopsided, 7-0, loss to the Titans…Back home Sunday, the Tritons side-stepped the rain but couldn't overcome No. 9 Rollins, dropping a 6-3 decision to the Tars…Things looked rosy when UCSD swept doubles, courtesy of Scott-Chou at No. 1, Nowamooz-Shannon Theisen at No. 2 and Tara Vanooteghem-Laura Wilke at No. 3 but Rollins owned singles, taking all six matches with only Vanooteghem at No. 4 and Lisa Asai at No. 6 extending matters to three sets...Click here to see more on Women's Tennis.

ENCOURAGING DEBUT FOR WOMEN'S CREW IN LONG BEACH
Dealing with wind but skirting the Southern California rain storms, Coach Colin Truex's Women's Rowing team had a solid opening day at the Long Beach Regatta, winning 4-of-6 races entered…In the big one, the varsity eight, the Tritons were second in a smaller-than-expected field, finishing behind UC Santa Barbara but ahead of UC Irvine, Arizona State and Chapman…Despite having two freshmen and a walk-on in the eight lineup, the Tritons made a spirited late charge and came up just short of the Gauchos…Click here to pick up Women's Crew news.
