MEN'S HOOPS GETS ROAD SWEEP; HEAD TO MONTEREY BAY, EAST BAY
Coach Eric Olen's Men's Basketball team finishes up a four-game road stint this weekend at Cal State Monterey Bay (8-11/6-10) and Cal State East Bay (7-15/4-12)…Still in the thick of the CCAA post-season tournament hunt, the Tritons are now 12-8 after sweeping the first two of those road outings last weekend…With three straight victories in pocket and five wins in the last six games, UCSD is now back to .500 (8-8) in conference play and remains seventh in the CCAA standings, just one game out of a CCAA tourney berth…There are three teams in a logjam one game up on the Tritons.
Friday night, sophomore Drew Dyer buried a mid-range jumper with one second remaining lifting UCSD to a shocking, 66-64 , upset of host Chico State…In a loss Wildcat radio announcers described as “mind-numbing,” UCSD got the ball back under its own basket in the waning moments when Chico State threw away an inbounds pass…Senior guard James McCann found Dyer on the wing and in one motion the 6-foot-6 forward launched the game-winner—the last two of his 17 points…In a game where they were out-shot, out-rebounded and trailed by as much as 10, the Tritons were led by the multi-faceted McCann who scored 23 points, pulled down six rebounds and added to his school D-II assist record with four, all while directing an offense that turned the ball over just four times…Dyer led UCSD with nine rebounds and Aleks Lipovic chipped in with 12 points.
Twenty-four hours later, Olen & Co. completed the double, holding on for a 67-65 conquest of Cal State Stanislaus after leading by as many as 13…Four players, led by McCann (16 pts.), scored in double figures, Dyer pulled down a team high eight boards and the Tritons harassed the Warriors into 15 turnovers…Check out all things Men's Basketball by clicking here.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FACES KEY ROAD PAIR
Battling to reverse a four-game losing streak and enhance its CCAA post-season hopes, Coach Heidi VanDerveer's Women's Basketball team finishes a four-game road run this Friday and Saturday, visiting Cal State Monterey Bay (5-14/2-14) and Cal State East Bay (12-11/9-7)…The Tritons have slipped to 11-9 overall, 8-8 in conference play and are now tied for seventh in the loop standings.
Still trying to find the right mix with junior point guard and leading scorer Miranda Seto tethered to the bench with an injury and junior starter McKennan Bertsch also out, UCSD dropped its third straight, 55-42, Friday night at Chico State…In an eminently winnable contest—the Tritons held Chico to just 36% shooting from the floor, including 2-of-16 from three-point range—VanDerveer's charges could not get the offense moving…Aside from a stellar 13-point, 12-rebound performance by junior post Emily Morris, the Tritons struggled on the offensive end, hitting just 28% of their field goal attempts.
With Seto and Bertsch back in the lineup Saturday, UCSD forced host Cal State Stanislaus into 21 turnovers but still couldn't find enough offense to avoid a 65-59 defeat…Bertsch (16 pts. on 6-of-7 shooting) and Seto (15 pts.) accounted for over half of the Tritons' offensive output…Click here for more Women's Basketball information.
CHICO STATE HERE TO OPEN CCAA SOFTBALL PLAY
The No. 21 Softball team opens CCAA play this weekend with a four-game series against Chico State at Triton Soccer Stadium…The two clubs, tabbed second and fifth respectively in the conference pre-season poll, will play doubleheaders Friday and Saturday…The Tritons sit 5-1 in non-league action while the Wildcats are 2-3.
Coach Patti Gerckens' squad showed more of the resolve that's becoming its trademark last Wednesday night, bouncing back from a one-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth to clip visiting Cal Baptist, 2-1, in the doubleheader opener against the PacWest foe…Freshman right hander Alayna Brenham collected her first collegiate victory, giving up just four hits while going the distance and whiffing seven…Redshirt freshman first baseman Emma Schneider filled the hero's role, roping a one-out sixth inning double to drive in both runs…The Tritons absorbed their first loss of the season in the second half of the twinbill as a late rally fell short, 7-4…UCSD lost the game despite hammering 13 hits and having the benefit of four CBU errors…For complete Softball updates, click here.
BASEBALL OPENS CCAA PLAY AT HOME VS. CHICO STATE
Chico State (4-1) comes to town this week for a three-day, four-game CCAA-opening series against the Baseball team, starting Friday night at Triton Ballpark…The two teams square off in a doubleheader Saturday and finish with a single game Sunday…Coach Eric Newman's ball club sports a 3-2 ledger in pre-conference play…UCSD was slotted sixth in the CCAA pre-season coaches' poll while Chico State was tabbed for the top spot.
UCSD went 1-2 in a non-conference series against CCAA foe Cal State L.A. last weekend…The two teams split a Saturday doubleheader in La Jolla, the Golden Eagles taking the opener, 2-0, behind two-hit pitching from a trio of hurlers, and the Tritons smacked nine hits in seizing the nightcap, 9-3…Leadoff man Troy Cruz, in the DH role, accounted for a third of those hits, reached base four times, scored three and drove in another…Senior Blake Fassler got the start, went five frames and picked up his second win of the young campaign…Down, 9-1, Sunday, UCSD put together a furious rally but couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling 9-8 in the rubber game of the series in Los Angeles...Ten hits (all singles) and four Golden Eagle errors got the Tritons back in the thick of things but Newman's outfit left 16 runners on base, including three in a six-run eighth that had brought them to the brink of victory...For additional Baseball facts and figures, click here.

SPIKERS AIM FOR WIN COLUMN AT HOME VS. USC, PEPPERDINE
After failing to snap their winless streak on a Northern California road swing, the Men's Volleyball team returns to RIMAC Arena this weekend to take on No. 5 USC (6-4) Friday and No. 3 Pepperdine (6-2) Saturday…Coach Kevin Ring's spikers are now 0-11 on the year.
A barrage of 12 aces helped power No. 7 Stanford to a 3-0 home victory over the Tritons Friday night…Junior setter Garrett Dempsey handed out 17 assists for UCSD, seven going to senior outside hitter Mike Brunsting…UCSD snatched the first set Saturday night at Pacific but lost the next three by the total of mere eight points as the host Tigers turned away the Tritons' bid for their first victory…Junior Scot Metzger finished with 17 kills, hitting a sterling .452 in the process, senior Nick Iorfino checked in with 12 kills and, as a team, Ring's charges hit a more than respectable .296…Part of the downfall came at the net where the home team had a13-5 blocking advantage…Click here to get more Men's Volleyball information.
SIXTH-RANKED POLO TO MAKE FIVE-GAME EASTERN TRIP
After ascending to No. 6 in the country last week, UCSD's highest ranking in the Brad Kreutzkamp era, the Women's Water Polo team split four games at last weekend's 16-team Triton Invitational and now travel to Pennsylvania for a single game against Bucknell Friday before participating in the Bison Invitational, hosted by Bucknell Saturday and Sunday…In the tourney, the Tritons will square off against Michigan and Princeton on day one and take on George Washington and Wagner the second day.
Last Saturday, seniors Sarah Lizotte and Melissa Bartow registered three goals apiece and nine different players scored as UCSD coasted past Marist, 16-9, in the first game of the Triton Invitational…The Tritons suffered their first loss of 2014 that night, dropping a 7-6 overtime decision to No. 11 Loyola Marymount, an outcome made possible by a UCSD ejection with eight second remaining in regulation, followed by a game-tying Lion goal three ticks later…Lizotte and sophomore Alexis Wieseler found the back of the cage twice apiece…Sunday morning, the Tritons fell behind early, rallied to tie but were never able to grab the lead in a 9-7 loss to No. 12 Long Beach State…Lizotte scored four goals, the second making her the all-time leading Triton goal scorer, surpassing the 245 posted by UCSD Hall of Famer and Olympic silver medalist Julie Swail…Kreutzkamp's crew bounced back in its final tournament clash, using a four-goal fourth period to turn away No. 20 Santa Clara, 11-7…As part of a solid all-around performance, Bartow rang up four goals while Lizotte cashed in with another three, allowing her to finish the weekend with a career total of 251…Click here to get your Women's Water Polo updates.

Following a star-crossed week at home, Coach Liz LaPlante's Women's Tennis team will host Point Loma Tuesday before embarking on a key three-match excursion to Hawaii where it will face Hawaii-Hilo (Friday), BYU-Hawaii (Saturday) and Hawaii Pacific (Sunday)—a trio of matches with major Division II post-season implications.
After taking a 2-1 lead in doubles Thursday, UCSD saw its match with Concordia washed out by rain…No re-schedule has been determined…Things got even crazier Friday vs. Azusa Pacific…Down, 2-1, after doubles and midway through singles, darkness descended on UCSD's North Courts and a power failure resulted in an approximately one hour delay before play was moved to another set of courts on central campus…In the end, the No. 17 Tritons dropped a 5-3 decision to the 27th-ranked Cougars…Freshman Nava Nowamooz recorded a three-set victory at No. 4 singles and teamed with fellow freshman Shannon Theisen to win a point at No. 2 doubles…Click here for complete Women's Tennis news.

At the South Duals, Runyan's men and women skated through the competition unscathed in all three weapons …A week earlier the men's team went 6-6 and the women 5-9 at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, IL…The most impressive victory for the men was a 14-13 decision over Penn and they also recorded a 20-7 win over host Northwestern…The women garnered verdicts over Wayne State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Tufts, Lawrence and Detroit and all nine of the their defeats came at the hands of Division I rivals, including highly-ranked outfits from Notre Dame, Northwestern,Princeton and Ohio State…Click here to keep current on Fencing.
