Brenton Named a Capital One Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas - Caitlin Brenton of the UC San Diego women's volleyball team has been named a Captial One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The announcement was made Wednesday by the organization.

Brenton was one of six NCAA Division II players named to the second team and the lone student-athlete from the West Region on the team.

A senior opposite hitter, Brenton holds a 3.91 grade point average as an economics major at UCSD's Revelle College.

Brenton earned several athletic accolades this season, including American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America honorable mention, AVCA All-West Region honorable mention, All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) First Team and San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for September.

The San Jose, Calif., native led UCSD in several statistical categories including kills (337), kills/set (3.30), hitting percentage (.254), aces (26), aces/set (.25), points (409.5) and points/set (4.01). Among all CCAA players, she ranked fourth in kills and points, fifth in points/set, ninth in kills/set, 16th in hitting percentage and aces and 18th in aces/set

Overall, 18 NCAA Division II players from around the nation were selected to three Academic All-America teams. Twelve of the 18 have at least a 3.90 GPA, with five student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Joining Brenton from the CCAA was Cal State Monterey Bay's Julia Ashen, who was named to the first team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her institution.

Thus far, Brenton is the second Triton to earn Academic All-America honors for the 2014-15 year. She joins Cassie Callahan of the women's soccer team, who recently picked up her third consecutive Academic All-America nod.

To date, 166 UC San Diego student-athletes have been named Academic All-Americans.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
