LOS ANGELES - Drew Dyer had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but the UC San Diego men's basketball team was edged, 68-67, at LMU in exhibition play Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.
Aleks Lipovic had 12 points and Adam Klie added 11 for UCSD.
LMU was led by David Humphries game-high 23 points. Ayodeji Egbeyemi had 16 and Godwin Okonji finished with 14 and a team-best seven boards.
The Lions out-rebounded the Tritons, 38-24, and held a 51% to 38% advantage in field goal percentage. UCSD turned the ball over just eight times while LMU lost it 12 times.
With just over 10 minutes left in the opening half, UCSD led by 14 points at 28-14. LMU climbed back in it and a three-pointer by Humphries at 2:58 gave the Lions a 35-34 lead. Triton transfer Jeff Van Dyke (Carlsbad/Pepperdine) hit a three-pointer at the end of the first half to tie the game at 37-37 going into the break.
With the score tied 43-43 in the second half, a Humphries layup with 15:28 left gave the lead back to the Lions for good.
Klie grabbed an offensive rebound after a missed three and hit a layup at the buzzer to account for the final score.
"I'm really proud of our effort tonight," said UCSD head coach Eric Olen. "I feel like we competed until the end and gave ourselves an opportunity late. We will use this as a learning experience, but I'm encouraged by the way we played."
It was just the second ever meeting between the two teams. UCSD won the first, 87-82, during the 1983 regular season.
It was the first of two NCAA Division I exhibitions for the Tritons, who play at UC Riverside on Saturday, Nov. 15 (4 p.m.).
