LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team suffered its third consecutive loss Saturday, falling in straight sets against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) leader Sonoma State at RIMAC Arena.
Scores were 32-30, 25-18 and 25-15 in favor of SSU, which improved to 16-5 overall and a league-best 14-3 mark. UCSD's records dipped to 12-9 on the season and 10-7 in the CCAA. The Tritons are tied for fifth place with Cal Poly Pomona.
Sonoma State used a solid offense and strong serving to earn the victory. The Seawolves hit .241 with 50 kills and 16 errors in 141 attempts. They also aced their opponent nine times on the night.
UC San Diego hit .176 with 40 kills and 18 errors in 125 attacks. The Tritons led in digs (63-60) and blocks (9-8).
SSU held a 64 to 50 advantage in sideout percentage.
UCSD led 4-0 to start the match. The Tritons had four set points, the final one coming at 29-28. Sonoma State scored two of the next three points and the score was even at 30-30. A kill by Madelyn Densberger and a block by Caylie Seitz gave the set to the Seawolves.
SSU led from first serve to last in sets two and three. The Seawolves scored the first three points of the second frame and led 5-0 in the last set.
For the Tritons, Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Heidi Sierks did as well, recording 24 assists and 15 digs. Caitlin Brenton had 11 kills and Alyssa McNeely had seven blocks.
Seitz led all players with 19 kills, while Kelsey Hull added 11. Kaitlyn Connolly posted a match-high 18 digs.
Sonoma swept the season series as it defeated UCSD, 3-1, on Sept. 26 in Rohnert Park.
With five matches left in the CCAA season, UCSD will play three of them next week. On Nov. 5, the Tritons play at Cal Poly Pomona before hosting Cal State San Bernardino on Nov. 7 and Humboldt State on No. 8.
