LOS ANGELES - For the second time this season, the UC San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets by Cal State L.A. Saturday night's scores at the Eagle's Nest were 25-18, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-18.
UCSD fell to 12-7 overall and 10-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSULA improved to 11-6 and 9-5.
"We had trouble slowing down their outside hitters," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We have to do a better job stringing good plays together and bettering the ball on each contact."
The Golden Eagles hit .305 as a team, collecting 68 kills with 22 errors in 151 attacks. Iona Lofrano had 22 kills to lead all players. Kymberly Silveyra had 16 kills and Loreal Carter added 15. Carter attacked at .462, committing three errors in 26 attempts. April Reyes had a match-best 24 digs.
The Tritons put down 28 less kills than their opponent and hit .185 (40-15-135). Caitlin Brenton had a team-high nine kills and 11.5 points. Setter Heidi Sierks earned a double-double with 39 assists and 13 digs. It was her team-leading 14th double of the year. Bailey Turk had 16 digs.
Cal State L.A. held a substantial advantage in digs, leading 72-53.
"Cal State L.A. is a good team that we have to play at a high level to beat," said Luyties. "We weren't there tonight."
The Golden Eagles also defeated the Tritons at RIMAC Arena on Sept. 19.
After two straight weeks of road matches, UCSD returns to RIMAC Arena to host San Francisco State on Oct. 31 and Sonoma State on Nov. 1. The contest against the Seawolves will be the team's annual Dig for a Cure match to help raise awareness for breast cancer prevention and treatment.
Both matches start at 7 p.m.
