SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC San Diego's newcomers continue to have strong outings during the fall season. At the UCSB Classic this weekend in Santa Barbara, the freshman duo of Justin Zhang and Eric Tseng finished fourth in doubles as well as sixth in singles. Alexandre Miaule highlighted singles play with a third place finish.

"The experience our freshmen gained this weekend is tremendous as they were able to see a high level of play," said UCSD head coach Timmer Willing. "Being around our returners with their committed and competitive efforts shows exactly what needs to be done to be successful."

"We had some good results," said UCSD assistant coach Tavi Popaluca. "As the season goes on, we will need to get all players to have consistent outings in order to make an impact on our year."

FRIDAY
Freshman Eric Tseng continued to perform at an exceptional level in fall play. Tseng had a dominating win against Fresno State's Evan McIntosh, 6-1, 6-1. He is slated to face UC Davis' Brett Bacharach in the championship bracket on Saturday.

"Eric had a good result again and what he is learning is that it is not just consistency, but it is about persistence as we get deeper into the weekend," Willing said.

Miaule also moved into the championship bracket after beating UC Davis' Tommy Lam, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He will face Cal's Jordan Smith tomorrow.

Mark Meyer fell to UC Santa Barbara's Nathan Eshmade, 7-6, 6-3. Meyer moves to the consolation bracket and will play Cal Poly's Naveen Beasley on Saturday.

Zhang also dropped to the consolation bracket after losing to UCSB's Andrew Riminton, 6-1, 6-1.

Zhang and Tseng highlighted doubles play on Friday. They defeated UC Riverside's Ruffin and Sean Robbles, 8-5, to move into the championship bracket.

Andrew Malozsak and Kona Luu fell 8-5 to Cal Poly, and Meyer and Miaule also fell 8-5.

SATURDAY
Meyer led the charge for the Titons on Saturday with two huge wins. The senior started the day by coming from behind to knock off Cal Poly's Naveen Beasley, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Meyer then went on to face Grand Canyon's Felix Schueller and came out with another come from behind victory, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. He will face Evan McIntosh in the ninth place match Sunday.

"Mark is highlighting why he is successful in his unwavering willingness to compete every single shot of every point," Willing said. "This example is invaluable for our freshman."

Miaule opened the day with a big 7-5, 6-1 win against Cal's Jordan Smith. However, he fell later in the day to Fresno State's Youssef Hassan in a 6-2, 6-3 loss. The sophomore will compete against Cal Poly's Devin Barber in the third place match tomorrow.

Tseng fell 6-4, 6-4 to Bacharach, but defeated Grand Canyon's Alex Roggenkamp 6-3, 7-5. He will face UCSB's Nathan Eshmade in the fifth place match on Sunday.

Zhang also had a strong performance Saturday. He defeated UC Santa Barbara's Luke Steeb 7-6, 7-5 and will face Malozsak in the fifth place match.

Zhang and Tseng were defeated, 8-5, by Grand Canyon and will take on Cal Poly tomorrow in the third place match.

SUNDAY
Miaule bounced back from a 6-2, 6-2 loss on Saturday and finished the tournament with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win against Cal Poly's Devin Barber to claim third place.

"Alex is bringing the effort every day and challenging people at practice as well as match play," Willing said. "I am happy for him to return to UCSB and have a good showing."

Malozsak earned a fifth place finish after defeating teammate Zhang, 6-1, 6-3.

Tseng took sixth place in singles after falling 6-0, 6-1 to Eshmade in the fifth place match.

Meyer won again Sunday, picking up a 7-6, 6-4 victory over McIntosh to give the Triton senior a ninth place finish.

Zhang and Tseng finished fourth in doubles after falling 8-7 to Cal Poly in the third place match.

"Zhang is a pleasant surprise with his meticulous effort in making changes to prepare for college-level tennis," Willing said.
