LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's tennis team defeated No. 25 Cal State L.A. by a score of 6-3 Friday afternoon at Northview Courts on campus.
UCSD, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches, improved to 10-5 overall. CSULA fell to 6-8 with its third consecutive loss.
Melissa Breisacher and Kyra Scott battled for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Leora Hemmerich and Christie Lau. Also earning doubles victories were the teams of Paula Chou and Jacquelyn Davis at No. 2 and Melinda Chu and Tara Vanooteghem at No. 3. Chou and Davis won, 8-5, against Jill Sangria and Tiffani Shaik, while Chu and Vanooteghem rolled past Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian by a score of 8-3.
In singles play, Chou downed Shaik at No. 3 (4-6, 6-3, 10-5), Chu dispatched Sangria in the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-2) and Vanooteghem topped Syndey Postal at No. 5 (6-2, 6-2).
Chu's win clinched the team victory for the Tritons.
The Golden Eagles won the top-two singles match-ups. In the second spot, Hemmerich eked out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win against Scott. It was the freshman's first loss of the season and she now holds a 13-1 overall record.
UCSD hosts 13th-ranked Grand Canyon on April 1 at 1 p.m.
