Nick DeBeaubien Places 10th in California Invitational Decathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - UC San Diego's Nick DeBeaubien took part in the prestigious California Invitational Decathlon this week, recording a 10th place finish after two full days of competition at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Stadium.

Competing in the California Invite "B" Section, DeBeaubien finished with a total of 6,079 points to set a new personal best in the event. His total ranks fourth all-time at UCSD and is the highest score by a Triton since Andrew Van Straaten tallied 6,169 points at the same event in 2008.

"It really was a solid performance by Nick and that showed in his total score," head coach Darcy Ahner said from Azusa. "We're pleased that he was able to come away with a lifetime best against a strong field."

DeBeaubien's best marks came in the shot put and 1500, as he posted fourth place finishes in both events. The senior from Lake Forest uncorked a throw of 39'2.5" in the shot on Wednesday and clocked at 1500 time of 4:41.38 to wrap up the competition on Thursday.

He finished sixth in the pole vault (13'1.5"), seventh in the discus (108') and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.07).

North Dakota State's Weston Leutz won the event with 6,920 points, while Logan Henderson of Idaho State finished second with 6,790 and Alex Harrison of Western Washington tallied 6,772 to place third. The California Invitational B Section featured a total of 16 decathletes from multiple levels.

DeBeaubien and the rest of the Tritons will now compete in the Soka Peace Invitational on Saturday in Aliso Viejo.
