LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team conquered NCAA Division I opponent Villanova Tuesday, 8-1. The Tritons swept in doubles and secured five of six singles victories to beat the Wildcats at Northview Tennis Courts. UCSD improves its record to 10-1, while Villanova falls to 1-5.
UCSD dominated in doubles play, with Austin West and Devon Sousa defeating Thomas O'Brien and Kelly Donaldson at the No. 1 spot, 8-5. At No. 2, Jason Wall and Kona Luu hung on for the win, by a margin of 9-7.
Sam Ling and Junya Yoshida continued their seven-game win streak by beating Villanova's Ryan Peyton and Michael Rosengren, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles. The Triton pair is now 9-1 in doubles play.
On the singles side, UCSD went five for six in a commanding performance. The Tritons won the top four spots on the singles ladder, with Austin West shutting out his opponent at the No. 3 position in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Chapman Chan hung on for the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Villanova's Thomas O'Brien in three sets. Sam Ling was the only Triton to fall in doubles, losing to Tim Abbracciamento, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot.
The Tritons remain perfect at home with today's win, recording five victories so far this season on the Northview Tennis Courts.
UCSD will have a quick turnaround, as it will face Western New Mexico on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in La Jolla.
