GLENDALE, Ariz.- After handily defeating Metro State, 9-0, the No. 10 UC San Diego men's tennis team's 24-match regular season win streak was snapped by Grand Canyon Friday with a 7-2 setback.
The Tritons' morning match was triumphant, as they blanked Metro State, 9-0. UCSD players won all six singles matches in straight sets. Tritons Kona Luu and Jason Wall were top performers on the doubles side, shutting out opponents Adrien Delvaux and Alec Parmenter, 8-0, at No. 2.
In the nightcap, the Antelopes handed the Tritons their first regular season loss in two years. UCSD had not been defeated in a dual since Apr. 10, 2010 when it fell to UC Santa Cruz, 5-2, at Sonoma State.
Grand Canyon swept UCSD in doubles play, with Sam Ling and Junya Yoshida falling by a narrow margin, 9-8, at the No. 3 position.
Tritons Junya Yoshida and Max Jiganti were the lone Tritons to secure wins against the Antelopes, both doing so in straight sets in singles play. Yoshida defeated Grand Canyon's Stephane Murray, 6-4, 6-2, and Jiganti defeated Peter Kazianschetz, 6-3, 6-3.
"Grand Canyon was the better team tonight," said head coach Eric Steidlmayer. "They had a good game plan in doubles, but both of us competed really well in singles."
UCSD is set to face BYU-Hawaii at 9 a.m. (PT) and Hawaii Hilo at 5:30 p.m. (PT) Saturday at Grand Canyon.
