UCSD Tops Marist in Terrapin Invitational Finale

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sarah Lizotte scored a career-high eight goals in the No. 14 UC San Diego women's water polo team's 15-10 win over Marist at the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday morning at the University of Maryland.

Lizotte finished the tournament with 14 goals over three games for the Tritons as UCSD went 2-1 at the Invite. On Saturday, UCSD defeated Wagner, 11-6, before falling to Marland, 14-6. The Tritons stand at 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Western Water Polo Association play after their first week of competition, having beat No. 20 Colorado State in conference competition on Thursday prior to the Terrapin Invite.

After the teams traded a pair of goals to open play, Lizotte and Kirsten Bates each scored on a Triton 6-on-5 to give UCSD a 4-2 lead. Melissa Bartow extended the lead to three at the 1:39 mark, but the Red Foxes responded with the next two goals of the contest to make it 5-4 in favor of the Tritons less than three minutes into the second quarter.

The team traded goals until Lizotte scored on a penalty shot to give the Tritons an 8-6 lead. Marist scored with a man-advantage to bring it to 8-7 with 1:03 left in the half, but Lizotte registered two goals in the final minute, her third and fourth goals of the quarter, handing UCSD a 10-7 lead at the break.

Jessica Tran was the lone Triton to score in the third quarter, as the Tritons failed to capitalize on seven 6-on-5 situations in the period. Still, UCSD was 8-for-18 with a man-advantage in the contest.

Lizotte gave the Tritons their biggest lead of the game, 12-8, 18 seconds into the fourth. Desiree Desauines tacked one one for the Red Foxes, but the three-goal margin would be as close they would get the rest of the way. Bates, Lizotte and Tran found the net again as the Tritons walked away with the five-goal victory.

Bates, Tran and Bartow registered two goals apiece and Allie Taylor blocked eight shots in goal. In addition, Bartow accounted for 10 ejections drawn in the contest. UCSD limited Marist to 1-for-7 on the Red Foxes' man-up opportunities.

UCSD's next match is scheduled for February 10. The Tritons will once again face the Red Foxes of Marist, this time at Canyonview Pool. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
