UCSD Athletics' 12th Annual Blood Drive Yields 150 Donors

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego Athletic Department's annual blood drive, held in association with the American Red Cross, continued to be the largest single-day drive at UCSD with 150 donors flocking to RIMAC on Wednesday afternoon to donate blood.

The event, now in its 12th year, welcomed Triton student-athletes, administrators and coaches, in addition to members of the UCSD community. The Tritons Athletes' Council (TAC) coordinated the event along with the Red Cross.

"The 2012 blood drive was the most successful in its 12-year history. The Red Cross is a great partner and this has become a seamless event that really demonstrates the commitment and spirit of our program to community service," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Ken Grosse. "Through the initiative of our Triton Athletes' Council, the majority of our donors are student-athletes. I think the baseball team, women's soccer team and both rowing teams deserve special recognition for the significant role they played in the success of this year's program."

Grosse also added that according to the statistics compiled by the Red Cross, the efforts from the annual drive have the potential to save nearly 400 lives.
