Fogarty Sets Another School Record As Tritons Sweep San Diego Collegiate Challenge

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams continued their recent domination over their local counterparts on Saturday, sweeping the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on both the men's and women's sides at the Triton Track and Field Stadium.

The Triton women won a total of 10 events and finished with 206 points to defeat eight other schools from the San Diego area and beyond. San Diego State finished in second place with a 138 points, while Point Loma was third with 103 and Cal State San Marcos scored 75 to finish fourth.

UCSD posted victories in six events on the men's side and tallied a total of 197.5 points to beat out seven other squads. Cuyamaca finished second with 109 points, while Southwestern College took third with 105 and Point Loma was fourth at 100.5.

The Tritons have been absolutely dominant against the other programs in San Diego recently, winning both the men's and women's competitions at the City Championships each of the last three years before sweeping the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday.

Senior sprinter Kelly Fogarty had a big day to lead UCSD on the women's side, posting victories in both the 100 and 200 meters and setting a school record in the longer event in the process. Her time of 11.83 in the 100 was good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifier, while her time of 23.79 in 200 earned an automatic qualifier and broke her own record of 23.96 in the event.

Senior Stephanie LeFever also won multiple events on the day, placing first in the 100-meter hurdles (14.18), high jump (5'7.25") and long jump (18'10.5"), while also contributing to a Triton victory in the 4x100 relay. She picked up an NCAA provisional qualifier with her performance in the 100 hurdles.

Three other Tritons recorded provisional qualifiers as Caitlin Meagher, Danielle Thu and Uchenna Agbahiwe all had strong showings in their events. Meagher posted a provisional mark with a winning time of 1:02.74 in the 400-meter hurdles, while Thu and Agbahiwe both earned qualifiers in the discus. Thu finished second in the event with a toss of 146'1", while Agbahiwe was third at 142'. The duo finished behind SDSU's Jeanette McConnell, who won it with a mark of 155'6".

In addition to her performance in the discus, Thu won the hammer throw with a mark of 173'8". She was competing with a heavy training hammer and fell way short of her usual marks, but still managed to outdistance the rest of the field. Fellow thrower Theresa Richards was UCSD's other individual event winner, claiming the javelin for the second week in a row with a toss of 128'8".

The Triton throwers were outstanding on the men's side as well, posting victories in three of the four events. Sophomore Ryan Eckert won the shot put with a toss of 48'8.75", while Zachary Nagengast placed first in the discus at 149'9" and Ab Shaheen was the man to beat in the hammer at 180'1".

Junior sprinter Roger Huang won the 800 with a time of 1:58.55, while junior transfer KaWai Ng posted a victory in the men's triple jump with a mark of 46'8".

UCSD swept the 4x400 relays on the day, with the women posting a time of 3:53.27 and the men clocking in at 3:26.00.

The Tritons will now head to UC Irvine for the All-Cal Championships next Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. UCSD's distance squads will take place in the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday.
