SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 18 UC San Diego women's water polo team fell in its final two matches of the 2011 Aztec Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex, 9-6 and 9-4, to No. 16 Cal State Northridge and No. 17 Indiana, respectively.
The Tritons are 2-4 in their last six games and move to 8-12 overall. UCSD went 0-4 this weekend.
Kirsten Bates and Katherine Biehle posted four steals in the opening game against the Matadors while Leah Gonzales and Hanalei Crowell scored two goals apiece. CSUN used a four-goal second quarter outburst to extend a 6-3 lead. The teams matched goals in the final two periods, finishing 9-6 in favor of Northridge. Allie Taylor tallied five saves in goal and also stole three balls from the Matadors, a season-high.
Indiana held UCSD scoreless in the opening quarter but the Tritons recovered with two goals in the second quarter to make it 4-2 in favor of the Hoosiers. UCSD added a pair of goals in the second half, but IU issued a three-goal third quarter and a two-goal fourth to extend its final lead to five at 9-4.
UCSD fell to Princeton in double-overtime, 12-13, before dropping a 9-6 decision to No. 20 Pacific during the Aztec Invitational on Saturday. The Tritons defeated the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield on Friday evening in Western Water Polo Association play at Canyonview Pool, 14-11.
