IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 18 UC San Diego women's water polo team fell in its opening two matches of the UC Irvine Invitational to No. 2 USC and No. 10 UCI on Saturday, 14-5 and 11-3, respectively.
The losses drop the Tritons to 6-7 overall. UCSD will be competing for 13th place in the Consolation Bracket on Sunday and will open the day against No. 17 UC Davis at 11:45 a.m.
The Trojans scored five goals in the opening quarter and eventually led by six at halftime of the Tritons' opening game. Kirsten Bates scored two goals while Felicia Orozco, Hanalei Crowell and Katherine Biehle scored a goal apiece. Allie Taylor received her first minutes in goal in a number of weeks and recorded a season-high five saves.
Crowell, Biehle and Leah Gonzales scored for the Tritons in the second match, but UCI took advantage of a six-goal outburst in the third quarter to take an insurmountable 10-2 lead into the final frame. Kirsten Ostosh tallied three saves while Taylor added two more.
UCSD has not faced UCD this season, but defeated the Aggies in the last affair between the teams, 10-9, on March 27, 2010.
