LOS ANGELES - The UC San Diego women's tennis team pulled out a tightly contested 5-4 victory over Cal State L.A. at the CSULA Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
After winning two of the three doubles contests, the Tritons split the six singles matches with the Golden Eagles to hang on for the one-point win. UCSD earned the victory after Saturday's matchup with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was cut short due to inclement weather and now stands at 3-3 on the season.
Cal State L.A. falls to 3-6 after dropping its fourth straight match.
The Tritons grabbed a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, as Cindy Dao and Jacquelyn Davis defeated Charlotte Spassoff and Jillian Sangria, 8-4, at No. 2 and Katie Mulloy and Roxanna Pourmirzaie recorded an 8-6 victory over Linda Majzlikova and Maria Xavier at No. 3.
Dao won at No. 2 singles after easily defeating Majzlikova, 6-0, 6-0, while Mulloy and Pourmirzaie also pulled out their matches in the fifth and sixth spots on the ladder. Mulloy took down Xavier, 6-0, 6-1, and Pourmirzaie recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Spassoff to give the Tritons a 5-2 lead and clinch the match.
Christie Lau, Larn McShane and Sangria won at No. 1, 3 and 4 singles for CSULA to make it a 5-4 final. Taskeen Bains, who returned to the lineup after missing Saturday's match with a hand injury, lost a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Lau in the top spot.
UCSD's match with Sonoma State, originally slated for this Friday, has been rescheduled for April 21. The Tritons will return to the courts on Wednesday, March 2 at Cal State Fullerton.
